Please write your questions for Patti here.

We have our own team member Peter to thank for arranging Patti's interview.  She won't do an interview for the radio or the press, but will do one exclusively for us!

So let's make the most of this opportunity!

May I say how wonderful it is to hear from Patti.  May I also please ask about her career between Dougie Squire's Second Generation and Ruby Flipper and how it was that she came to join Ruby Flipper as I got the impression that Patti did not go through the general auditions.

Hi Patti,

Please can you tell me what music you enjoy?, who were your favourite music artists back in the 1970s and who are your favourites today?.

Hi Patti

it is lovely to have you in touch with your fans.

I recall meeting somebody for the first time , who was in a training film I had used a lot. It was confusing that I did not know him at all. In the same way, it is easy for us fans to think we know these lovely dancers, whereas in most cases all we know is their screen persona.  Even Bruce Forsythe said of his screen image, You don't think that's me !  I feel that we should be very careful about questions relating to illness, marriage problems and such personal matters. Should the interviewee offer some information, that's fine, but I do not  feel happy about any direct questions.

Back to Patti. Your arrival softened the blow when Ruth retired. It was clear that you were not just a lovely face, but a personality.

How do some dancers project personality , when others remain a beautiful face?  Given that you were a very experienced dancer when you joined RF, was this a help or a problem?  Did you have ideas that you wanted to put to Flick and Ruth ?  If so, did they take them on board ?   Were you aware that you still have a fan base ?  Do you ever attend conventions ?

Thank you for brightening our lives for years

What lovely comments from Mojo to Patti, I very much agree with his compliments of Patti as Im sure many other members will.

May I also ask Patti how she feels about the apparent resurgence of interest in the Dancers in the last few years with sites like this one and One For the Dads and the opportunities the internet provides for seeing these wonderful dances and pictures again?

Following up Mojo's fine comments i would like to thank Patti for great expressive routines like Sunday Girl, You Don't Bring Me Flowers and Lonely Boy.  I'd also like to ask about her memories of the years of dancing after leaving TOTP in 1981

Rusty

I concur with what mojo said so eloquently. The interviews focus on their professional lives, and we don't want to ask anything too personal.

Some great questions on here!.Looking forward to the answers.

Hi patti ,i would just like to say thank you to you and the rest of legs and co for making every thursday night as i was growing up in the 1970s a real treat for the week ,the highlight of totp for me in the 1970s was the dancing girls ,could you possibly remember if you and ruby flipper ever danced to leader of the pack on totp in 1976 ,both sue and lulu cant remember but i was wondering if you have any memories of doing a routine to this song ,thanks patti and also thanks peter for making this interview possible

Rusty Carno's picture

Hi again Patti. hope I'm not becoming a pest.  We have heard from other dancers about songs discarded at the last moment for going down the chart instead of up but no-one to my knowledge has recalled the name of a replaced song.  Can you recall any rejected routines Patti?

Rusty

I'd be interested to hear about your early life. Did you grow up in Hong Kong? And when did you come to the UK?.

Thanks

Patti I loved your performances and notice that you were absent from TOTP for about 6 weeks in late Summer/early Autumn 1981 much to my disappointment missing routines like "Hold on Tight" and "Slow Hand."  I wondered if you can shed any light on this period because you were very rarely absent before this time (thank the Lord!)

Patti may I ask you to describe in brief (even one word each perhaps) each of your fellow dancers in Legs & Co.  Also which word/brief description do you think they would use for you?

Rusty

Hi Patti,

Looking back at the 1970s, how do you feel about that decade?, for me its the most exciting decade ever but I would be interested to read your views on the 1970s.

I would also like to add, I think you had amazing Disco era hairstyes Patti, so lovely and far better than todays bland hairstyles, you sure had beauty & style.

Dear Patti,

I just want to thank you for the grace, beauty and FUN that you brought to us in your performances. I can't begin to estimate how much we all love you here at PansPeople.com, and I mean that genuinely and warmly. Thank you so much.

Where has my question to Patti gone?

Suefan's picture

Hello Patti, I was wondering if amongst all the many costumes you wore on TOTP you had any particular favourites.

gibb1962's picture

What are your memories of your first dance on TOTPs with Ruby Flipper?

Thank you,Patti

Hi again Patti,  may I ask if you ever considered auditioning for Pans People in the mid-70s or did it not fit with your earlier career timing?  Can you tell us your impressions of Pans People at that time too please?

Hello Patti

Its hard to believe i have the opportunity to talk to my first crush after all these years.

Iwas 12 when i first saw you and L&C in 1979 on TOTP,i was struck by your grace and beauty

for me your persona lit up the stage as if it was just you there alone, i was and still am

captivated watching the wonderful routines of the good old days.

I would like to thankyou so much and the team for this interview as i hope you realise you still

have so many adhoring fans who love you so much, so will you please, please stay in touch.

I would like to know if you still reside in the UK,also, do you have children, and what was your

favorite routine, and what routine you thought,i'll never do that again!

do you see the rest of the girls at all, i saw you on Never mind the buzzkocks, would you consider doing

more tv.(i hope so).

God bless you Patti Hammond, ypu dear dear Lady.

Hi Patti.

Cant believe I'm actually asking you these questions but could you please tell me if there was any costume that you wore, or turned down wearing, that you thought was a little too risque and did you enjoy the cabaret appearences as much as doing television.

Love always

Simon

Hi Patti, there are some Legs & Co and Ruby Flipper routines so far lost to us as I am sure you know.  I am wondering if you have any recollection of dances to "Do You Feel Like We Do" by Peter Frampton or "Spinning Rock Boogie" by Hank C Burnette in Nov 1976 with Legs & Co  or perhaps "Leader of the Pack" by Shangri-Las from July 1976  (?Motorbikes) with Ruby Flipper.  Any memories would be much appreciated although I am foggy about what I did 35 years ago too so no pressure!

Rusty

Rusty Carno's picture

Patti may I ask about your experiences in films as I know you danced with Legs & Co in the Stud and then in Nutcracker with some of the other TOTP dancers.  I really liked your performance as "Sue" in Nutcracker by the way.  Were you asked about any more parts?

Rusty

Gary H's picture

Dear Patti, Do you feel in hindsight it was a terrible mistake for dance troupes to be dropped from TOTP in favour of the video? I certainly do. Also, with the success of Strictly, do you think it's time dancers (long on the bottom rung of the ladder of celebrity) were adequately appreciated as singers, presenters & DJs have been for years? Personally I feel you've all been dreadfully short-changed & would like to see more respect afforded to your contribution to a fabulous show which I'm currently enjoying (with Legs & Co the obvious highlight) on BBC4. Anyone with an ounce intelligence knows who the real 'stars' were & are. Oh & (as Brucie would say) you're my favourite! x

Patti, many of your dances are now available to watch on the internet both on devoted sites like this and on the internet in general and for me and for other fans this is a great thrill but i wonder how you feel watching the dances from the 1970s and 1980s.  I sincerely hope it gives you at least a small measure of the joy we all feel.

I've just seen a wonderful video of you singing and dancing with The Second Generation in 1975.I'd like to ask you about your time with them. Thanks Patti.

Hi Patti

I have another question/s if ok.

can you tell me what your top 5 dance routines were.

Also did you enjoy ballet, and did you ever teach dance/ballet in you career.

What are your memories of meeting the Phantom Flan Flinger on Tiswas 1980 it looked like you and the girls had great fun.

Would it be possible for a signed photo, it would be wonderful to see you again.

Thankyou for enriching my life.
