Photos from Wiped Routines
Forums:
I thought this would be best separate from the Recalling the Wiped Routines thread.
The idea here is to try to gather photographs of routines that have been lost. That way we can assemble some sort of record of the routine, as well as being helpful for providing thumbnails for the Routines section.
So if have a photo and (think) you know the routine, please post it here and tell us which routine it was and the (approx) date.
I think you had one at least, didn't you Cornershop?

Unknown routine, circa 1969-71
I can't help with the routine, panfan, or even the year, but this must be one of the sadly lost ones:
Left to right (hope I'm right): Dee Dee, Babs, Andrea, Louise, Flick
problem photo
They all appear to be in outfits in which they will dance, but would such high heels be suitable ? Are they about to do some thing on the chairs like a recent Ruby Flipper number ? Why is the lovely Ruth not there ? Questions, questions.
an other thing
the dresses get shorter from left to right , not an accident surely
Chairs & Skirts
Yes, I wondered baout Ruth. At first I thought, maybe she's been edited out on the right, but there's no reason to suppose that.
Perhaps she was unwell that day or something?
The outfits remind me of a later dance, whose name has of course escaped me for the moment, but that was post Andi.
Was It Your So Vain?
Did this picture remind you of the routine for Your So Vain?, it reminded me of it Panfan.
Ruth was in this number, as
Ruth was in this number, as something like a wild native girl, whereas the others were being 'prim and proper'. That would fit with mojo's observation of them in high heels, in that the five of them pictured may have remained relatively still compared with the 'wild girl' dancing round them. So thinking caps on folks! What number would this interpretation fit with?
It's hard to date this one but I'd say 1970 to early '72.
Wilde guess
"Wild native girl" = Daughter of Darkness?
I did wonder about that one
I did wonder about that one title wise myself, but when I listened to it a while back I couldn't really see it working.
I think the dresses are all
I think the dresses are all the same length; its just the way they have been arranged. Louise is sitting on great folds of material while Flick has gained at least a couple of inches with all the padding. Perhaps Ruth was showing so much leg that the photographer decided to crop the pic!!
Lost 'TOTP' performance
I share others' fascination with that photograph. Will we ever know what the routine was, whether Ruth was part of it, or even the year this was taken?
We might be able to gain something from this one. Compare those psychedelic pictures in the background to those in the photograph with Clodagh Rodgers below:
Did the set designs change every week, like the girls' costumes? If so, both photos could well be from the same episode. The top one is credited as 01/01/70 at the Getty Images website (like most of the others featuring Pan's People), and the one of Clodagh Rodgers is dated 01/01/69. I believe that the latter is the more accurate.
I have looked at the episode details for both years at the FormelEins Forum. These are the shows in which Clodagh is supposed to have appeared on in 1969 (looks like there's some guesswork here):
10th, 17th and 24th April - Studio performances of Come Back and Shake Me, with the last credited as 'Repeat'. No details of what the girls danced to, although I Heard It Through the Grapevine, I'll Keep Running Back and Road Runner all have '(Disc)' next to the title.
8th May - Another studio performance of Come Back and Shake Me? So it says. Nothing for 'Disc' or Pan's People.
3rd, 17th and 24th July: Clodagh performs her new single Goodnight Midnight (one of my favourites) in the studio on each of these editions. Gimme Gimme Good Lovin' is the only 'Disc' entry, for 3rd July,
7th August - Another studio performance of Goodnight Midnight. Nothing for 'Disc' or Pan's People.
30th October - Her only performance of new single Biljo, apparently. Again, no info for the dancers.
25th December - A return to Goodnight Midnight in the studio. Or was it a repeat? This "exists in colour", I'm pleased to say. It's not on YouTube but if it shows up I hope that's where the photograph comes from. The girls might have danced to Bad Moon Rising (the Disc entry for that day).
Very depressing research. I just wish I could go back and save everything from that time. These days programmes appear on YouTube and iPlayers not long after they've beeen on TV. If you can be bothered to watch them.
01 January 1970
I forget if I mentioned it before, but 01/01/70 is the default date for many of these early press images - just the earliest the database allows - and should always be ignored.
Sometimes it was changed to the correct date, but otherwise ignore it!
Ruth absent again
Hello again.
Just realised that Ruth is missing from this line-up as well (forgot to add that they are probably Andi, Dee Dee, Flick, Louise and Babs). This could be significant. Were they from successive editions, when she wasn't there? I read a few weeks ago that she was busy elsewhere for a time during 1969 and have now found the thread where this was mentioned:
(Open in another window, please!)
http://panspeople.com/?q=node/431
(No Ruth?)
That's it! She was choreographing Dusty Springfield shows around September/October 1969. This might explain her absence in both photos. But I don't think it helps us establish if the second is from the same show as the Clodagh Rodgers picture..
Hi cornershop ,looking at the
Hi cornershop ,looking at the photo of pans people above judging by the studio sceneray i would say these photos were taken around the autumn winter of 1971 ,and clodagh rogers sang lady love bug on the 16/9/71 and on the 400th edition of totp on the 11/11/71 ,the performance pans did on the 400th show ,was to diana ross ,surrender ,so this photo could be from that show ,but this is only a guess ,as ive no proof of the definite date the photos were taken
Cilla Black on 'TOTP', 11/11/1971
Hello Jez,
I hadn't considered Clodagh Rodgers' later releases! How remiss of me.1971 is probably the better guess, come to think of it.
Only one clip is available from the 11th November 1971 show (what is known as an 'orphan')and that is due to its being shown on the German programme Disco the following month. A fact I've learned about this and other performances in the last couple of days:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgwo7ZfeZI0
(Cilla Black - Something Tells Me (Something's Gonna Happen Tonight)
No sign of the psychedelic pictures, however. Back to square one?
hi cornershop ,if you look at
hi cornershop ,if you look at the scenery on you tube of rod stewarts maggie may and the tams hey girl dont bother me ,both taken from the autumn of 71 ,no psycadelic pictures ,but the other overhanging frame work in the studio is exactly the same ,so im deffo taking a guess this is from the same year ,also if you look carefully at the glass circles behind pans in the scenery ,they are the same as on the tams clip
'Top of the Pops' sets
Sorry it's taken so long, Jez. All these months later, I've finally got round to providing a capture from The Tams' performance. Lead singer is Joe Pope:
Maybe not the same show but the set, including the black background and coloured lights, appears to confirm that this unknown Pan's People routine is from 1971:
Left to right: Andrea, Dee Dee, Flick, Louise and Babs
'Top of the Pops', Christmas 1968
Thanks again for your efforts, Jez. I hope those photos have helped establish they're from the same show, even if we don't know the routine.
You've probably seen pictures of Babs and Dee Dee painted gold in their dressing room for one of the Christmas shows (where they danced to The Good, the Bad and the Ugly). Another of my discoveries ties in with that, and is the earliest Pan's People article I've found. This is from the Daily Mirror, 19th December 1968:
I think the others are (L-R) Andi, Dee Dee, Flick and Ruth. Is Louise obscured there somewhere or was she absent?:
A doctor was on set for Shirley Eaton in Goldfinger as well, although her character wasn't so lucky, dying from skin suffocation.
In the Christmas 1973 show, celebrating 10 years of Top of the Pops, the group were painted white, something they would have already had done for the Monster Mash promo. And again for Dee Dee in the better known studio version, with a green-faced Babs.
This is really an excellent
This is really an excellent find cornershop ,youre postings and articles are a credit to you and panspeople .com ,well done and i really hope you can find more of these rare pics and info ,thank you very much
Just thinking, what was the
Just thinking, what was the point of painting Pan's gold as they would only be shown on TV in black and white
Dave
Maybe although the colours
Maybe although the colours couldn't be seen, the metallic shine would come across? Who knows!
Just picked up on your comment about the dressing room photos, Cornershop, with them painted in gold - we we have those up here? Don't think i've seen them?
Or, thinking about it, maybe
Or, thinking about it, maybe it was also shown on BBC2 as by that time BBC2 was a full time colour station
Dave
Christmas '68 recording + Babs and Dee Dee painted gold
BBC1 and ITV began broadcasting in colour on 15th November 1969, two years after BBC2. I can't find any evidence those Christmas shows were recorded in colour for BBC2 repeats.
There is an audio recording of Pete Murray and Jimmy Savile introducing the Christmas Day edition on YouTube. If you listen closely you'll hear Pete say "it's only 1.25 in the afternoon", confirming what I've just read in the Daily Mirror from that day:
Top of the Pops - 1968 - Everlasting Love - Love Affair
Panfan, here's one of the six photos showing Babs and Dee Dee in gold make-up:
Better to post the whole set at the 'Top of the Pops Performances (1968)' thread.
Golden Girls
Thanks for posting that Cornershop.
Are the other five photos available to put up as well? We may as well have the complete set!
Pan's Gold 1968
What an amazing photo.Dee Dee & Babs painted in gold.So this was for the Christmas Day 1968 broadcast - & I am broadly guessing that it was a Red Indian war dance for 'The Good The Bad & The Ugly' by Hugo Montenegro ?.So it seems that only a brief audio tape recording exists of that show - someone placing a microphone up against the television loudspeaker back in 1968 .There's the intro to 'Everlasting Love' perhaps the same recording has Jimmy or Pete introducing 'Pan's People' to 'T G T B & T U ' ??.It's like pieces to a jigsaw puzzle!.Maybe we could eventually put something together that constitutes 'Pan's People dancing to 'The Good,The Bad& The Ugly' - on youtube: using the newspaper photo, gold paint photos+the audio intro+the song itself ??!!.
Mystery routine
The 'complete set" can be found at Top of the Pops Performances (1968).
I'd hoped this was from Both Sides Now but comparing the hairstyles and maxi skirts they're wearing here to those in the video I was wrong. No Flick either. Another lost performance, I presume (1972?):
Left to right: Andi, Ruth, Louise, Babs and Dee Dee
Thank you once again
great rare pictures ,thanks
Thank you once again
Thank you once again cornershop, please keep these rare photos of wiped routines coming ,if only we new though what pans were performing to ,i think this is where we need the help of one of the pans girls themselves ,pheraps they might be able to shed some light on the routines
That is a teriffic Pan's
That is a teriffic Pan's People photo cornershop15.Could be 1972,but remember that Flick's absence could still make it 1968 1969 ,1970 or 1971 because maybe Flick was on holiday that week?.Andi's hair is very long was that more the 1969 & 1970 period?.We all have to be like Sherlock Holmes with these photos!.
Unidentified Pans image
Thanks Cornershop from me too.
A great image and at least these quality colour photos give us something at least from the wiped routines.
More lost routines?
Going by the sets, I'm certain these are all from 1971.
Possibly Dee Dee on the left, then Louise (or is it Ruth?) and certainly Babs. Are these the same slacks they wore for the Coconut promo?:
The red hexagon matches the one seen in this clip from the 15th April 1971 edition:
Rolling Stones - Brown Sugar
The Pan's People routine that week was Remember Me, by Diana Ross, but I doubt that's where the photo is from. Could it instead be Frankie Valli's You're Ready Now, from 7th January 1971?
Clive Dunn sang, or mimed, Grandad four times on Top of the Pops, including the 7th and 14th January. The latter exists (see below*) but it seems we've been deprived of the show where Clive teamed up with the girls. Look at Flick:
Standing are Louise (left) and Ruth. Nearest to Clive are Flick and Babs, with Dee Dee (l) and Andrea at the front.
*Clive Dunn - Grandad [totp2]
The hearts on their costumes here recall the classic routine for Love's Theme , broadcast 14th February 1974. This was surely with Valentine's Day in mind as well but Popscene have My Sweet Lord for the 11th and 18th February. Either they're misinformed or I'm onto something:
Left to right: Andrea, Ruth, Flick, Dee Dee, Babs and Louise
Odd that most of the girls' hands are placed on the hearts like that. As if they were making sure the accessory was stuck on properly.
More evidence that there is at least one photograph for every routine they did.
Excellent photos you've found
Excellent photos you've found there cornershop, many thanks. Sadly they don't trigger any memories of the dances though. As for "My Sweet Lord" I reckon Popscene are misinformed as I have the Pans routine to that one dated 21/01/71.
Unidentified Pan's Routine
Could this last image be from the 'Maggie May' by Rod Stewart routine that Dee Dee once spoke in a T.V 'Top of the Pops' reunion for a daytime show hosted by Dale Winton along with TOTP hosts Fluff, DLT and I think Tony Blackburn. Dee Dee produced a patch, not unlike the named ones at the girl's side, saying she had kept this as a souvenir. Hope this is some help.
ALEX.
Hi cornershop ,well and truly
Hi cornershop ,well and truly brilliant rare photos of pans people you have found yet again ,please keep up the good work ,judging yet again from the totp sets on these photos ,the first photo scenery was from around march to sept 1971 ,and i would say the bottom photo is the scenery used from jan to march of 71
Rare PP photos
Thanks again Cornershop. These are all great images. So nice to see crisp shots.
The first one with the stripey trousers: the shirts and movements suggest something like Russian folk dancing to me. That ring a bell with anyone, or is that a red herring?
As for Grandad - I forget where I heard it recently (DTDQ or TOTP True Story, maybe?), but I recall Stan Appel or someone saying they seriously discussed what outfits they could stick them in and said we'll have to get them in gymslips one week. I thought he might have been kidding, but I guess it was true!
I like the outfits with the named hearts in the last image. Shame the hands obscure some if them. Is it one if these literal 'hand on heart' interpretations, even if the heart is in a slightly different position?!
purely a guess on the last
purely a guess on the last photo ,but the only song i could think of with the names on the heart from that period of totp ,was remember me by diana ross ,and my interpretation would be that they pointed to their names on the heart to the line remember me ,but this is only my guess work on the photo
panfan ,is there any chance
panfan ,is there any chance you could ask dee dee to take a look at these photos sometime ,to see if she can identyfy any of the routines
Sure Jez, I'll ask over the
Sure Jez, I'll ask over the weekend.
Amazing Pantasy photos from '71
Utter magic photos many thanks cornershop15.They are every man's Pantasy ha,ha !!.
Even Clive Dunn's 'Grandad' too!.Obviously no way to dance to that. But what routine the Hearts on Hot Pants?.'Remember Me' By Diana Ross ? as their names are individually embossed on the hearts.
Wonderful photos.
Internal BBC Archive clips 'confirmed'
Firstly, loving all these rare pics from presumably wiped routines. Some good news has just been posted on the Missing Episodes (TOTP) forum. 'Archive raider' Ray Langstone has confirmed that 'orphan performances' (mainly of Pan's People) exist in the BBC archive. Please feel free to access the website & click on 'Internal BBC Archive clips' to reveal that they do indeed have 'Green River', 'I Want You Back', 'Montego Bay' amongst others.

Missing archives
Thanks, Gary H
I must look out that website and add a link to the links section (if it's not already there).
Another Day
Hi Jez, Dee Dee says: the Song is "Another Day" Paul McCartney & Wings.
Valentine's Day edition?
Many thanks to Dee Dee. Another Day charted on 27th February 1971 but I still think those hearts imply that Valentine's Day was imminent and convinced the photo is from the 11th February edition.
Remember Me would have been an ideal song to go with the names on the hearts as they weren't individually credited until 1973. An article from the previous year, featuring Louise, revealed that letters were addressed to "The girl with the very long hair" and "The girl with the slanting eyes".
Thanks for much to panfan and
Thanks for much to panfan and dee dee for the info on the picture ,at least that song can now be another entry on the pp 1971 database ,as we now know pans must have danced to it ,many thanks to dee dee ,once again
So it looks like we can add
So it looks like we can add another routine to 1971? I'd agree that ore Valentine's would be logical. Has someone checked Another Day was shown on 11 Feb 71?
according to the totp
according to the totp databases panfan ,another day was not played on that edition of totp ,there are 2 entries classed as disc performances on the 11 th feb 71 ,and they were its the same old song ,the weatherman ,and im the one you need by smokey robinson ,which would probably fit the photo as well ,but dee dee could well have the another day performance in her personal video collection and was able to identyfy the photo with that song ,
Another Day on another day, then !!
Ok, so all can say is that they danced to Another Day, but can't confirm the date.
Are there any possibilities for dates, Jez, that you'd suggest?
Tartan knickers and striped trousers
Hello again.
Alex mentioned that on a TV show Dee Dee "produced a patch" she'd worn for the Maggie May routine (9th September 1971, according to OFTD). But in the 'Still Pantastic' interview last year the dancer said it was the "tartan knickers" she kept. Could that be what you saw, Alex? Dee Dee also has Arthur the Crocodile from Crocodile Rock.
Nice to know that some stars are as sentimental as myself. In the same article Ruth reveals that she isn't. "I never kept any old costumes", she said. It's difficult to believe they were only meant to be worn for one day. In the I Love 1974 programme, Babs admits to loving sequins and this is followed by an excerpt from When Will I See You Again. Is that her favourite routine?
Quote from Ruth in that interview:
I also remember a routine on trapezes in the 1970s. I'm afraid of heights. If you watch it back, you can see me sitting up in the air, a look of terror on my face.
Are you thinking what I'm thinking?:
The trousers have a Circus - as well as a Coconut - look about them. I still think that's Louise but Ruth's description seems to fit.
Circus act?
Interesting thought, Cornershop, but I'm not sure if you could interpret that in terms of a trapeze. Maybe some other routine?
i think its the same show i
i think its the same show i watched that alex can recall ,if it is then dee dee brought out the heart she wore on the loves theme routine from feb 74 ,and i remember her putting on a i think it was tartan mop style sort of hat ,and said when we did maggie may we had these long scalfs on ,then we had to wear this as well and laughed
i think the best possible
i think the best possible date panfan for the another day performance is 11,3,71 ,as that is the only time apart from 25,2,71 edition ,which still survives that its entered on totp databases as a disc entry ,on the 25/2 edition ,jimmy saville can be seen dancing along with the audience to the song ,there was a totp promo used to cover the song on the 4/3/71 ,so that just leaves the 11th march
