By Gary P. Rose

Gillian Susan Clark was born on 18th April 1959 in Colchester, Essex. A former beauty contestant, she  won numerous Beauty Queen titles before leaving school and joining Legs & Co. In 1976, she won Miss Rhyl Bikini Girl, Blackpool Queen of the Lights, Miss Eastbourne, Miss Blackpool, Miss New Brighton and Miss British Beauty and came second in Miss Great Britain. Considering that most successful contestants would win titles like these over a couple of years, Gill did this in one summer , aged, 17, which is quite an achievement. She had also been the runner-up in Miss New Brighton in the previous year. She didn't win Miss UK which would have led to Miss World.

She was due another two years at school but wasn't sure what she wanted to do in life. When the chance to dance with the new Legs & Co line-up came, she went for audition. Sue, Patti and Lulu were all present at the audition and, although she didn't know it at the time, Pauline and Rosie had already been chosen. Even after she had been given the job she had second thoughts about accepting it. She didn't know whether to stay on at school or not to finish her training. Her father wanted her to stay at school but her mother encouraged her to take the dancing job.

Having made her decision, she made her first Top of the Pops appearance, on 21st October 1976, dancing to the Average White Band's song "Queen of My Soul". Gill remained with Legs & Co throughout their duration on Top of the Pops. In 1980, Gill took a brief acting role when she appeared in the television series Minder, in which she played a secretary. Her last Legs & Co routine was to "The Birdie Song" by the Tweets although she did appear a couple of weeks later as a backing dancer for Altered Images' "Happy Birthday". After Top of the Pops, she continued to perform with Legs & Co in cabaret for a while but left shortly after getting married.

Gill is married to Bill, a computer expert. She moved to Australia after Bill landed a three-year job there but they have since returned to the UK. Gill now runs her own beauty therapy business. She and Bill have a grown-up daughter.

Gill has had an exciting life since leaving school, Im sure she must be pleased she followed her heart and took the TOTP dancing job.

Nice to know Gill is back in the Uk again.

Gill, if ever you find this website, please let me say Thank You for your work with Legs & Co, we are being treated with the 1976/77 re-runs of TOTP on BBC Four, as with Pans People & Ruby Flipper, Legs & Co are still giving great enjoyment to this day : )

Thanks to Jez for providing information regarding Gill's husband and their move to Australia.

I apologise now if I've got Gill's Beauty Contest details wrong or if they are in wrong order. I also read that Gill was from Raby Mere, which is near Wallasey in Merseyside. It's possible that she lived there at some point.

NEW MISS BRIGHTON BEAUTY CONTEST: "In 1976 the winner of the New Miss Brighton Contest automatically gained entry to Miss British Isles contest at Great Yarmouth. Gillian Clark won that year and went on to take the national crown. She came from Raby Mere. She became a dancer and appeared on TV" (Source - New Brighton Open Air Bathing Pool. www.liberator31.co.uk/wallasey/New-Brighton)

Any mistakes will be amended as soon as possible.

Thanks

Well Done Gary,

Once again another well writen Biography.

panfan's picture

Thanks for the bio, Gary.

It's amazing, accruing all these beauty titles even before leaving school!

Gary's picture

Yes, that's what I thought too but most articles say she joined Legs straight from school. I presume she entered the Beauty contests whilst still a teenager. Hopefully, other members - or perhaps even Sue and Lulu - will be able to correct us or offer more information.

panfan's picture

I think 16 was the minimum age of entry for these contests, so perfectly possible. I forgot to look for the date on your press article in case that gave any clues....

Great to see some information added to Gillys biography

One fact about Gilly was that she made an appearance in The Goodies, she played the Queen (well voice only) in  "Royal Command Performance".

Here is a nice picture of Gilly

Thanks for the info, Andy. And for the photo.

PansRubyLegs's picture

Thanks, panfan, for the interesting biography! I knew Gill had won Miss Blackpool and Miss UK, but I didn't, know about her string of other beauty contest titles!

panfan's picture

Glad you like it, PRL, but it's Gary's work, so he deserves the credit. You can be sure it will be expanded when possible!

PansRubyLegs's picture

Sorry, Gary, credit where it's due! Thanks very much for the interesting biography on Gill, most of which was new to me.

Gary's picture

I'm glad you like the biog. I wish I could tell you more! But, as soon as I find out anything new, I'll update it and let you know.  Thumbnails of all the Legs dancers will be added as soon as panfan has a bit of spare time.

Thanks again

A better version of the picture accompanying the article:

Legs and How

DANCER Gill Clark, of TV's Legs and Co., went out on a limb yesterday when she showed off a swimsuit in the cold.

Gill, 21, who was helping to launch a new swimwear in London, tried to keep warm by wrapping up in a fur coat. Then, like everyone else yesterday, the Top of the Pops dancer was happy to leg it back inside.

The Mirrorpix library has a slightly different caption:

(Category:)  Fashion - Beachwear

Legs and How

Dancer Gill Clark, of TV's Legs and Co., went out on a limb on Wednesday, 26th November.

She was showing off a new swimsuit in the cold but managed to keep some of her tender sections warm by wrapping them up in a shaggy fur coat. Brr....ave girl... Gill, 21, shows a leg.

This was taken the same day as the group photo I posted yesterday.

cornershop15's picture

She graced the pages of that 'paper as well but the quality of the scan is the worst I've seen. Luckily, Suefan came to the rescue with the original image at One for the Dads. Many Thanks.

The article reveals that Gill did a bit of acting at this time. Was it just the once?

Swim suits and Co!

AT TIMES like these, with the weather matching the economic chill, just close your eyes and think of summer.

Now open your eyes - and take a look at what the best undressed woman will be wearing on the beach next year.

It's heartwarming stuff, although it's doubtful if many will shape up as well as Legs and Co. dancer Jill Clark.

She and the rest of the Top of the Pops eye catchers* stepped out at a West End nightclub yesterday to show off the 1981 swimwear range in Freemans mail order catalogue.

Next week, Jill we be displaying more of her talent when she switches roles, and channels, to play a secretary in the Thames TV series Minder.

Meanwhile, if you can switch your attention back to the swimsuit, it is a pale green halter neck that is delivered to your door for £8.50.

But it doesn't come filled ...

*Attractive females are more likely to be called "eye candy" these days. Another ghastly Americanism.

An expert in beauty contests / contestants contacted the site to give correct details of the contests that Gill appeared in before joining Legs & Co. Many thanks, Chris, your help is greatly appreciated.

Many thanks again to Chris from the Remembering Seaside Beauty Contests website: he has just sent us these images of Gill from 1976.

How did Gillian not win ? Interestingly, Sian Aidy Jones of page 3 fame came 2nd in the 1976 Miss UK contest. Not to sure if thats the same contest as Miss Great Britain ?

RYAN

panfan's picture

I'm no expert on these contests, Ryan, but I think they were distinct, Miss GB and Miss UK.  "Miss" seems such a quaint term now!

RYAN's picture

Well in a way its a good job the lovely Gill didnt win, we certainly wouldnt be discussing her now, she would have missed the Legs & Co gig for sure. I wonder if Flick would have gone for another blonde ?

RYAN

RYAN's picture

Gill also won a Spanish beauty contest, some thing like Miss Costa Del Sol or Costa Brava, well something Costa !

RYAN

Paperboyplod's picture

Miss UK, maybe represented Northern Ireland, as well as the British Mainland, Miss GB, just England, Wales, & Scotland, that's just a wild because I don't know, I didn't even know that there was a Miss GB, however these days both have seemingly disappeared, & we just have beauty contests for the four UK constituent countries, & the winners of those go straight through to Miss World.

Gill could've gone on to win Miss World, but then she may have been too busy to take her place in Legs & Co.!

Justin

RYAN's picture

Gill couldnt have won Miss world because she didnt win miss UK. Usually the girls who entered those contests only did it for one year. Miss Worlds loss, was Legs & Cos gain.

RYAN

panfan's picture

I just reread Gary's biography an see how many contests she entered. And apparently she DID win the 1976 Miss New Brighton, after coming runner up the year before.

RYAN's picture

What a great pity Gill and a few of the other Legs & Co girls are so reticent to re-live there time as TOTPs dancers, compared to the Pans girls who are always keen to talk about those days.

RYAN

Paperboyplod's picture

It probably goes back to their latter days on TOTPs, where Legs & Co. where by & large sidelined, being reduced to supporting dancers for the musicians or audience cheerleaders & often placed so that they hardly got any camera shots, as if they'd somehow outstayed their welcome, were only there as if they had to be, & the producer wanted people to forget that they were there.

That to me was an affront to L&C, after all that they'd done to enhance TOTPs, over the previous five years, seven in Sue's case, I'd imagine that they were glad to get out of it in the end & do things how they should be done during their Cabernet shows.

Most of the Pan's People OTOH, left the group volentarily while on a high, just wanting to do something different having enjoyed their time on TOTPs where they never had a producer who hated them!

Justin

RYAN's picture

Yeah maybe PBP, but i know for a fact that at least 50% and maybe more of Legs & Co just want to get on with their lives and have no interest in re-living those days. I really do not believe the antics of one Micky Hurll has anything to do with this. Lets not forget that during the period of backing dancing, Legs did also do some really excellent full routines as well.

RYAN

RYAN's picture

Gary may or then again may not want to edit his Gill biography. On the 29/10/81 TOTPs show, Gills last appearence was a brief 30 second solo to The Fureys ` When You Were Sweet Sixteen`. Then 3 songs later Legs & Co were gone forever when they appeared as backing dancers for Claire Bloody Grogans Altered Images. Yes it still grates me even now.

RYAN

panfan's picture

Gary always wants to make sure his biographies are accurate and up to date, so we're always very grateful for and additional information Ryan!

When it comes to adding in simple things like first/final appearances, I can easily sort that out, but  I'll leave editing the main content to him, as it's his work.  He's usually on during the morning, so will see the discussion then.

I've just added in that final performance (and her first for that matter!) - have I got the date right, Ryan?

RYAN's picture

Yes `Queen Of My Soul` is quite correct. ` The `When You Were Sweet Sixteen` is a blink and you will miss it performance. Here is a link to it. http://legsandco.blogspot.com/2011/07/legs-7-co-sweet-sixteen.html but im afraid its on ropey old Video bam and may not work, but as i say, we are working on replacing these with new video hosts.

RYAN

panfan's picture

That's great, many thanks!

There's so many bits and pieces, dates here and there, graphics and thumbnails and stuff to add, but we'll slowly get them filled in!

RYAN's picture

Yes theres loads of bits and pieces with Legs & Co.  Certainly regarding the odd solo spot or backing dance. Im not sure if you have any sort of listings on PP.com as regards TOTPs performances for Legs, but if i come across one i will give it the once over. Im affraid im still trying to find my way around,LOL.

RYAN

panfan's picture

Yes I've had a lot of help with the listings, and their accuracy depends on peer review from TOTP experts like your good self, so please do feel free to point out omissions and corrections, Ryan. I'm still making my way chronologically through the early years of PP (much of which is, as you know, like the Dark Ages, with all those wiped routines!) and just keeping up the Legs lists with the BBC4 repeats, but eventually I'll catch up!

If you go to the menu at the top, and click Routines, you'll get a list.  The Legs section is here.

RYAN's picture

The best guy in the TOTPs dancing fraturnity for Pans People routines is Jez. He is the go to guy for me. Luckerly all the Legs performances, even the backing dancers, solos and part solos are all listed on OFTDs. My dearest wish is that for the next 4 years BBC4 continue to show the re-runs and we can see these routines in real time, so to speak. Hey, ive just thought, am i clogging up Gills thread ?

RYAN

panfan's picture

Jez has been a great help indeed!  Don't know where I'd be without him and many others here!

Sometime things veer off topic occasionally, but I've learned not to get uptight about that sort of thing.  Better a good discussion than trying to force everything in the right thread - I learned through experience that doesn't work, and usually has the effect of killing discussion stone dead.

But feel free to comment on another post if (you can find one!) that fits the bill better, or start one yourself in the forum!

RYAN's picture

I always like to have designated chat threads in the other place, somewhere to chat about almost anything, but preferably our chosen topic. If i could find enough people to talk with id happily chat away all day about this stuff. Theres endless things to talk about. I think ive touched on this a few times, and it may irk you somewhat Panfan, but my main gripe about this place is the layout. Id spend a lot more time here if it was easy to navigate, and im sorry to harp on about this. But i think im slowly getting used to it now.

RYAN

panfan's picture

Feel free to create a chat thread if you'd like Ryan, that might be a good idea, as it can veer all over the place witohut anyone worrying about going OT.

Maybe here in the forum is a good place to start one.

I do know the navigation is still difficult, Ryan, and I do want to improve things, so please feel free to add your thoughts in this Suggestions thread.  If I can get the recent comments sorted out that would be one thing.  I am still learning how everytihng works, and it is possible to generate blocks which display lists of recent this, that or the other.  Trouble is, unlike a simple forum, it's got bits everywhere!  Remember to track and search meantime.

Simon O's picture

You were in the OftD forum right from the beginning Ryan, so you are bound to know where everything is. I think it is just a case of getting used to the layout rather than it being radically worse here.

I did start reading through some of the threads on OftD to get my bearings, but since I am going through a busy period I have had to drop that for a while. I would like to find out more about that Amy and Kace thing though, it sounds like rather an intriguing story.

Simon.

RYAN's picture

Hi Simon, well quite simply if your going to read threads etc on OFTDs, might i suggest you ignore the first 3 or 4 months of when the forum began. There was a lot of silliness then and a lot of it centered on our two young friends who youve mentioned. Thank goodness those days have gone now and that place, like PP.com can focus on whats really important to us, the appreciation of our lovely dancing girls.

Daler007's picture

Gary, top work fella but the small picture isn't of Gill....

Daler007

panfan's picture

Hi Daler, nice to see you about!

This has caused confusion before for those unfamiliar to the site: the small thumbnail is the avatar of the author of the page (Louise Clarke in the case of Gary).

We'll get proper big pictures of the dancers up eventually, to prevent this understandable confusion in the future!

Paperboyplod's picture

That's just the very reason why I'd never use an avatar showing any of the faces of our great dancers, the sorts things I may say could be attributed to the dancer(s) in my avatar, I come out with some silly remarks sometimes, & that could be potentially damaging to whoever is in my avatar, anyways the avatar I'm currently using is the big star from Legs & Co.'s "Wishing On A Star routine!

This thread has gone far enough off-topic let's talk about Gill & her time as a beauty pageant entrant, would she have made more money from that if she's have won Miss GB, than her dancing career?

Justin

So Miss Great Britain's loss was our gain!.Wonderful photos of lovely, gorgeous Gill.Thanks.

Andy's picture

I have a little bit about Gilly I have been meaning to add and talking of Flicks Radio Interview on another thread has just reminded me

Flick talks about Gilly having a brother who worked on "Hooked on Classics" as Flick says "He Worked on it and She danced to it"

One of the person who was on "Hooked On Classics" was Louis Clark who also worked with ELO so I wonder if this was her brother.

Gary's picture

Interesting information there, Andy. It's worth looking into. I'll do some research and see what I can find.

I'll let you know what I come up with,

Thanks

Gary

Gary's picture

Hi Andy,

Rosie has a brother called Peter Hetherington and there is a Peter Hetherington who played bass for the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and released an LP called Hooked On Classics. Do you think it could be Rosie's brother, rather than Gill's, who Flick talked about?

JEZ's picture

I remember listening to this radio interview on radio 2 ,it was done the day after the girls had danced to startrax disco club the night before ,i remember amongst other things the presenter asking flick what song was she working on for the following weeks routine ,and she replied it was the randy crawford song ,and said keep your fingers crossed the song doesent go down the charts inbetween ,but i dont know why ,but i always thought it was mentioned it was rosies brother who played on the hooked on classics single ,my memory mustnt be as good as i once thought it  once was ,

JEZ's picture

Hi gary ,ive still got a feeling it might have been rosies brother who played on the hooked on classiscs single ,as ive said i could be wrong because its years ago now since i last listened to this radio interview ,but pheraps you may be able to do some detective work on this info for us ,cheers

Hi Jez,

What a coincidence! - I've just posted a comment about this on Andy's thread (see Gill's Brother 2) LOL!

cloudnutter's picture

I used to live across the road from Gill Clark in Raby Mere near Bromborough in the mid 1970's. At the time she was a pupil at The Hammond School in Chester, a private school mainly for dancers, but since expanded to include acting. More recently Hollyoaks' Jorgie Porter attended there in the 6th form as a dance student, and the award winning teen actor Jonny Clarke (Hollyoaks' Bart McQueen) had a drama scholarship there.

Coincidently back in the 1960's I used to live in Wallasey where my neighbour and great friend at that time was Phil Steggles/Haig who was with Ruby Flipper, and whom ironically was replaced by Gill Clark when Legs and Co were formed to replace RF. Phil's mother is the former stage performer Patsy Haig, whose maiden name he used for his professional name. His father owned a furniture store in Liscard (in Wallasey) and has an older brother called Tony, and younger brother named Carl. Phil was born on October 31st 1955. Phil was always a performer and even had his own Punch & Judy show when he was only about 11. He was also into Dr Who and I think may still have an original 1960's or 70's Dalek he got from the BBC.

I remember a reporter from the Daily Mail visiting Gill Clark at home in about 1976 to do an article on he remarkable success as a beauty queen. Gill's mother's efforts to get the two of us together were unsuccessful as we were always otherwise attached, and her efforts were finally ended when Gill moved with her parents to somewhere near Haywards Heath in Sussex, where she continued with her dancing training and progressed into a career with Legs and Co.

It would be very interesting to know how she is now, and if she reads this comment, I hope she remembers me from number 14.
