Has anyone purchased (or made!) any of the compilations often sold on eBay?

panfan's picture

mojo2007:

Yes.
The Best of Pans people vols 1 & 2 ,
In concert,
a short one off compilation and
two DVDs which are almost entirely Legs & Co. Quality varies. The extracts on other DVDs are better than the In Concert DVD but it is complete. I assume that there are better quality pirates elsewhere. "The Best of" came in a box with a picture , the others just in cases. I am busy comparing their contents with the missing episodes list.
Somebody on youtube has rehearal items and a differnt person some of the John Denver show items. It would be good to get these on DVD.

mojo2007:

I have just received a DVD from Scotland which was sold under the John Denver 1973 banner. It includes 5 of his 6 BBC shows and Pans are on screen for over half an hour. The down side is that , whilst speckle free , many of the images are rather wishy washy, and the girls often share the screen. However the plus side is that there about 15 different occasions they are on screen and they looked beautiful and beautifully relaxed. They really did react well to an audience.

Now lets see if we can get anything from tvinsider on youtube

I havn't bought any DVD or VHS from ebay, but I do have a half hour documentry made by the BBC - which I recorded onto VHS. I cant remember when it was shown but as I recorded it at my previous address, it must be at least ten years ago.
The documentry has interviews with most of the members of the group and plenty of footage of various TOTPS appearances.
The quality is not to bad, so I might transfer it to DVD and put it on ebay if anyone is interested.(if thats legal)

panfan's picture

mojo2007:

I have no idea if it is legal.

The documentary that I have seen is called Diggin' the dancing Queens. I think it was repeated about the time that TOTP was dropped. It has been sold on ebay in last few years. The really rare item is In Concert, I tried to get a copy from a BBC friend about 1976/7 and he said that it was in Fort Knox. I have only seen one advert for In Concert and paid about £25 if I remember correctly.

DTDQ is the only one I know of - it's about 30-40 minuntes long.

I think it was originally on Channel 4, then rebroadcast on BBC?

The In Concert has been on eBay quite a few times lately. It was up about weekly for a tenner a time, and I think recently it has been included in compilations too.

PP photo sold today to German collector. he paid £127 for a small picture signed by Ruth. I was watching it with a view to bidding but no way would I have spent so much

mojo2007:

Did you see the 12 page booklet which sold on ebay in the last few days ? The bidding began so slowly that I fooled myself into thinking I might be able to get it.

It sold for £180 ! Why does the BBC not see that there is a profitable market for Pans to this day ?

Yep, totally agree-about the Beebs ignorance/erroneous-thinking, that is. I commented on this before. I once actually enquired to the BBC about 'Pans people DVDs'...and essentially the response I got argued that the copyright on the music would be prohibitive (presumably BBC of course still hold copyright on the actual video dance footage).

However, that argument doesn't really wash...there have been countless examples of retrospective music DVDs (TOTP for a start, and here in Oz a programme called 'Countdown', plus many other examples). So I don't buy into that argument they then peddled -about 9 years ago I asked I think! (they probably still peddle this argument of course).

What it means though is that the BBC are not doing their 'scoping/market homework' into such a venture. Nostalgic interest in the 70s is fairly high I reckon and Christmas DVDs spread over a few years -asay 30% tp 50% guaranteed present for any male of adolescent age in the 70s-you know for Grandad/Dad -plus some more younger fans would catch it. As Vivian in the Young One used to say 'the potential markets enormous!!'

I haven't yet bought any Pans stuff on ebay though. ...I'm always considering, but would seriously consider reasonably priced DVDs -esp one with the infamous rare 'Down Down' -Status Quo.
Having said that if 'official DVDs' were available then we should all be buying those... royalties should clearly be going to the Pans members themselves.

Before the auction ended I tracked down the seller and offered him a sum for a photocopy. Obviously I cannot make commercial use of the copied pages but I have taken a photo of Ruth from the material for this site . I will see if there is anything that others may be interested in. It does raise some questions about sources of information. Apart from here, there is the pans site which appears to be a subset of the Sarah Brightman site but never appears to be updated, Wikipedia, and BBC stuff. Is there anything else ?

Heyup ...
That photo of Ruth would be great to put up. Is that the image you used for your 'avatar' pic? Interesting one of Ruth I reckon. Could you load a bigger version? Or link to same?

As to other stuff/sites, are you speaking of the 'Unofficial Pans' site (the one with the old ATV emblem on it (for those old enough to recall that)? I wasn't aware of it being related to a Sarah Brightman site though.

The BBC microsite most should be aware of (not touched for a few years now except one or two amendments to wallpaper images-grab em now while they're still there!). That has the Ruth interview of course -[and what about that 'mucky questionable handkerchief' tale Ruth mentions. Somehow I think of an 'Albert Steptoe' (or possibly an excited spotty 14 year old) sending it in as a 'pressy' for them. Seedy or what?]

Theres the three yahoo sites, there are two (Panfans) that are precursors to this site. Panfans2 was meant to be a further repository for files/pics cos Panfans was 'filling up'. Theres also one called 'PansPeople', but these sites seem fairly dead. I think I posted last (Panfans) when this site went down a few weeks ago! Plus I put a screensaver on the Panfans site.

In terms of 'info' though...not much else I reckon to those you mention. Though there's a few retrospective TOTP type sites with sections covering Pan people. Typical standard info' available though.

I think its a shame that Dee Dees book fell through a year or so ago...that would have been a great little insiders view of info on Pans.

-be 'seeing' you

Yes , that is part of the photo. Unfortunately my computer skills are limited and as I only have a photocopy and no website I do not know where I could install a link. I assume you have appropriate skills and wonder if I can copy it to you. Can we install pictures in this site , other than the avatar ? The little booklet includes a picture of "Barbara" Lord which may raise a few eyebrows.

theres loads of free pic hosting sites like tinypic or imageshack.

If you reply to a post here and look for "Additional Options" at the bottom left corner, there's an "Attach Files" option, so you can upload images to the forum. It will accept the standard image formats (see allowed formats - this is restricted to prevent uploading of executables which may contain malware). Failing that, you can upload files to panfans still.

The only issue might be file size - 128kB here (I'm sure I can alter it somewhere), so if you are scanning it you might need to resize it (to 72 ppi and 1500 px or less on longest side). If you can't do that, just email me a scan file and I'll do the necessary.

Many thanks for offering to share this with the group!

Help

a PP photo , signed by all the girls , has just sold for £206

I knew it would sell well so did not bid. Surely the BBC can see that there is "money in the brand"  .

I have to pay for a new PC, my friend talked me into a 24" monitor, so did not bid for a signed photo on Ebay. It went for £21 !   Somebody got a bargain this morning

I never seem to have the time to follow eBay these days mojo, who was the photo of?

Andy's picture

It was the one that was posted by in fact it looked the same one

I didnt win it by the way

panfan's picture

It's amazing the price that photo went for, mojo.  A few years ago it might have fetched ten times that!

I think it is the exact same one:

I just went to look to see what's on ebay these days, and what do you know - mojo's Dance the Do slide is being sold, apparently from the sellers "private collection"!  It's even still got the PP.com watermark on it!  Private collection?  People downloading and selling prints of what people can get for free here!

10 x 8 inch colour gloss Record Company Promo Photograph (Not Home Printed)
Pans People
From my private collection.
These are not original photos but reprints on very good quality photographic paper.

At least they state they're not original photos.  I remember being very gullible years ago and buying some PP photos that turned out to be web images printed on a home printer!  I could have done that myself!  So what if these ebay ones are not home printed, printing a web image "professionally" doesn't make a low res web download any better.  But in this case we've provided them with a hi res scan to profiteer from.

It's one thing to sell an original print that you own, but when people are seliing prints of images they have acquired online for free, that's pretty low.
Paperboyplod's picture

That photograph looks like it's been personally signed for it's original recipient, therefore I could never have purchased it for myself, it'd always be like I was in posession of somebody else's personal belongings, even though they've officiallty given up ownership to me.

I'm sure that Pan's People wouldn't have wanted anybody but the person for whom they signed the photograph, to have it, for me personally it'd be like buying a trophy that somebody else won, bearing their name, & not mine!

Yes Justin i'd much rather have an autographed picture which is signed to me not someone else. This person on Ebay is from Colchester, and has loads of Abba photos for sale,as well as other stars includung half a dozen of Pan's People. Most if not all are listed as 'promo' pictures.I suspect however that some of the Abba photos are from a book by 'Bubi' Heilemann.

I see your point too PBP but at this stage in the game I think any unearthed picture is worth trying to obtain and i would certainly bid on pretty much anything regardless of who it's addressed to.  I would also post is on here once purchased as I think these enthusiast sites should have as complete a record as possible.

I wrote to the person selling a copy of my slide, asking for a royalty payment . The following day all this sellers items vanished.  However all her items, except my slide, reappeared with a different seller name.

I am still waiting for the royalty cheque
