2 For The Price Of 1 :
I wonder if everyone would like to play a little interactive game on here where we list a specific Pan's People or Legs & Co. or Ruby Flipper or Zoo etc. Dance Routine & also a pop act performance from the same edition show that was really personally impressive!.
So it must be from the same TOTP Edition. The reason I thought of this was because trawling thru YT in search of any elusive Pan's People performances has also turned me onto some 1970's songs that I'd forgotten about or never even heard before.
So I'll start ! hee,hee........ :p...........
'Top Of The Pops' Thursday 1st July 1971 - DJ Jimmy Savile :

TOTP 12/5/77
Hi Peter
I wasn't sure if you were including wiped editions that exist outside the BBC, so I've skipped over one, but here's one that most definitely exists at the BBC, presented by the lovely Jimmy Savile. :)
Marvin Gaye - Got To Give It Up (danced to by Legs & Co)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cF-e6q5rz8
Piero Umiliani - Mah Na Mah Na (danced to by Legs & Co)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNvezJ02Kg4
Billy Paul - Let 'Em In

A great live version of the Wings number from the lovely smoothie Billy Paul including some different lyrics from the original.

Boxing Day 1971
Boxing Day 1971

2 For The Price Of 1
I have picked 15th Feb 1979, My first introduction to Legs And Co (as an eleven year old) on TOTP's dancing to:
Edwin Starr Contact, the girls performed wonderfully, and i fell head over heels for Patti.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=EjRRDqennXY
The other one for me would be Lene Lovich, Lucky Number,as i thought she was quite unique and
wonderfully strange.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=QjHBgrVBrNI
Pattifan.
Everyone's suggestions are fabulous :)
Great selections everyone, including the most recent ones posted by you, Pattifan - Edwin Starr and Lene Lovich.
Off topic, Legs & Co never danced to Lucky Number, but here they are dancing to Say When:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TPIOD6hChc
Claire
29th April 1971
For me, it has to be the 29th April 1971 with Pans People dancing to the Jackson 5's "Mama's Pearl". I absolutely love that one and leave it to your imagination to find out why ;)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAzDiSQuSN4
And the other great clip from that week was of course the No. 1 record, maybe the most unusual No. 1 of the 70's, Dave & Ansil Collins' "Double Barrel". I am the magnificent!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hw01eOeOyk
Needless to say, that was one of my first 45's :)
Hotpants / Potential 8/7 and 15/7/71 Pan's People Routines
Hi Scrooge
The dancers stand out in their hotpants. :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmPQFyoXKiI
Dave & Ansil Collins' follow-up Monkey Spanner is quite good but Double Barrel is my top favourite of the two songs.
Monkey Spanner appeared just the once on TOTP in the form of an unidentified disc on 8/7/71, which has got me thinking.
As there are two discs listed, not confirmed, but from logic, Monkey Spanner would have been used for the chart rundown and the number 1 Middle Of The Road's Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep would have been danced to by Pan's People, very likely also with the crowd, over the credits.
If this is correct, for 15/7/71 Atomic Rooster would have been the chart music and the number 1 by T Rex - Get It On the Pan's People dance routine, very likely with the crowd also dancing.
Claire
Hot Pants!
Hi Claire,
Tony Blackburn was the host on 29/04/71, and after Pans People dancing to "Mama's Pearl" he said, "I didn't tell Pans People they could borrow my pairs of hot pants...". Tony Blackburn in hot pants, go figure! LOL! Right after PP, this edition featured the film of Ringo Starr performing "It don't come easy" in Norway, another highlight of the show.
"Monkey Spanner" is another good tune, and another 45 I bought, though not quite as good as "Double Barrel". Of course the line "This is the heavy heavy monster sound" was recycled a few years later in the intro to Madness' "One Step Beyond...". Dave & Ansil Collins released two or three further singles which went nowhere, but in 1973 Dave Collins put out a solo record called "Hot Line" which I absolutely love!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j68PsTucj9I
Funny thing is, Dave "Collins" is actually Dave Barker, but as everyone thought Dave & Ansil were siblings sharing the name "Collins", he used this name for solo releases.
Unfortunately I can't help you with 8/7/71 and 15/7/71 but to my knowledge "Monkey Spanner" was never performed on TOTP by the duo.
Tony Blackburn in Hotpants! lol & a Ringo Starr alternative film
Hi Scrooge
I'd love to see Tony in hotpants! lol That would be a very interesting sight. :D Tony would probably be having a good laugh if he visits this site.
There's another film of Ringo Starr, which may possibly be the one shown on 22/4/71?, as it has no miming:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHzqjTXNpg0
I didn't see TOTP in 1971, but this seems a very likely contender for being the very footage shown the week before the Scandinavia footage.
Dave Collins is a good pseudonym for Dave Barker. I didn't know "Collins" isn't his real surname.
I've just clicked on the Dave Collins link. Never heard this one before. It's very catchy. :)
Monkey Spanner would have fitted in perfectly to a chart rundown or as the playout, but I think you'll be right that Dave and Ansil never performed this in the TOTP studio. It probably went down before they had a chance to perform it.
Claire

'Top Of The Pops' Thursday 15th November 1973 : DJ Tony Blackburn :
Pan's People 'Do You Wanna Dance ' - Barry Blue
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dfpe09hkH88
same show
David Essex - ' Lamplight '
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dIK3eRcKLY
Excellent choice
15th November 1973... what an excellent choice:
Ringo Starr - Photograph (charts)
Alvin Stardust - My Coo Ca Choo
Marie Osmond - Paper Roses
Paul McCartney - Helen Wheels (video)
Gilbert O'Sullivan - Why Oh Why Oh Why
Mott the Hoople - Roll Away The Stone
David Essex - Lamplight
Osmonds - Let Me In
Kiki Dee - Amoureuse
Gary Glitter - I Love You Love Me Love
Barry Blue - Do You Wanna Dance (Pan's People)
Glam was obviously in full swing, and the Osmonds at the height of their popularity. A legendary performance by Mott the Hoople featuring the Thunderthighs on backing vocals, Alvin Stardust making his TOTP debut, a lovely young Marie Osmond (yeah I know the song is a tad too maudlin), a rare TOTP appearance of Paul McCartney (if only on video), David Essex with the follow up to his smash hit "Rock On", Kiki Dee also debuting on TOTP, and the former "King of Glam Rock" Gary Glitter, followed by Pan's People dancing to Barry Blue, what a great line-up! All killer, no filler, LOL!
Of all performances, the lowest charting record peaked at No. 13. No obscure song to start the show with, not a single "I-never-heard-of-that-one". What a contrast to the recent repeats of 1977. Makes me even more sad to think about how many of those great shows were wiped...
Thanks Scrooge
Yep definitely 1973 was 'Glam Rock' in full swing. It didn't last much longer tho.As you say not a single bad act or filler act in TOTP Thurs 15th Nov 1973.
I had to think about this I
I had to think about this I know routines but not normally what other act was on the show
But watching today a show with not one but two favorites routines “Bee Gees-Night Fever” and “Michael Zager-Lets All Chant” on 20th April 78
I know that is two but also on the show was one of my favorite artist Paul McCartney “With A little Luck”
Many options, hard choice, fun trying
This really got me thinking too so thanks for the opportunity F14, I've gone for a contasting pair of tunes on 10th April 1975 with a lovely Pans People dance to Jim Gilstrap's Swing Your Daddy and then the fine Bad Company performance of Good Lovin Gone Bad, not a major singles hit but a great Rock song by Mick Ralphs and his friends IMO
Rusty
This is the mind-blowing choice!
Thanks Andy & Rusty. Really interesting choices guys!.Thankyou so much & I've added you to the list i've compiled of the full set of choices further back on the thread........
........so who's choice is it now?......!........?......well seems to be me again..........ha,har.......... :p.......stand well back guys 'n' gals....cos this is the big one !!!:........

So Vain
I LOVE this routine for Your So Vain, its amusing and quite sexy, what a shame it doesnt exist in colour anymore, I wonder what colour their shoes and dresses were, matching or various colours?, anyway, thanks for the link, I enjoyed watching this one again.
New Entry!
From the TOTPs episode of 09/22/1977, No More Heroes by The Stanglers, immediately followed by Legs & Co. dancing to Best Of My Love by The Emotions!
Justin
Walk In The Night
Thankyou PJ & Justin.Yep it's a pity that Carly Simon's 'You're So Vain' routine isn't in colour. It should be in colour but obviously not this source.'No More Heroes' one of my favourites too.

Flashback into "prime time crime"!
King Of The Cops
Thanks Scrooge.Brilliant choice!.P P dancing to Mike Oldfield & Billy Howard's 'King Of The Cops'.I actually bought KOTC record when it came out in late '75.The impressions sound much more convincing on record than actually seeing the characters.Kojak is superb which makes me think maybe I should put Telly Savalas 'If' on here?.......
Flag This One
'Top Of The Pops' Thursday 13th March 1975 : DJ Noel Edmonds :
Pan's People - 'Philadelphia Freedom' -Elton John :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pmlg7Kt-qWY
Same Show:
Telly Savalas - 'If' (only I could sing!!!) :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mUA55Du9dw
.................& next up is:..........................?...................
If
I didn't like the record by 'Kojak' when it first came out in '75,but i think it has a certain charm now.The Xmas version is good,as does it live.
Glenn
There was the Yin and Yan
There was the Yin and Yan version on 10th April 75
Utube = Yin and Yan - If (HQ) |TOTP 10-4-1975|
If ..... only Kojak could sing
Ha,ha thanks for reminding us of the 'Yin & Yang' version. They really do take the piss out of the fact that Telly Savalas couldn't or wouldn't sing 'If' .But Telly S went to number 1 with the song so he had the last laugh.
KoJack-ed It In?
Thanks Glenn. No Telly Savalas was no crooner,in fact I don't think he could sing at all? but he made a real sentimental effort to recite 'If' .Nice song.
'Top Of The Pops' - Thursday 2nd July 1981 - DJ - Dave Lee Travis :
'Legs & Co.' - 'Razzamatazz' - Quincy Jones :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjqiW4VFmXA
same show :
'The Specials ' - 'Ghost Town' :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpYyqaSYLyw
The moral of this : guys 'n' gals don't make this website a 'Ghost Town' please post when you are on here .Thankyou.........
Every time people mention
Every time people mention Ghost Town I always think of the Father Ted episode where A DJ has forgot all his singles and finds only Ghost Town he spends the rest of the time just playing in constantly
Hold On Tight
Here's a fantastic dance by Legs & Co to ELO's 'Hold On Tight' 27.08.81.Host is Richard Skinner.
