Dee Dee Makes DJ's Dream Come True!

Dee Dee At The Helm of Special Music Radio studio on board Als Spirit.

Former Pan's People member Dee Dee Wilde helped make a fan's dream come true when she came to Weymouth Harbour in Dorset last Wednesday ( 9th May 2012 ) to meet PP.com moderator PJ ( Lee & Mary Fan ) and his friends on board Weymouth Charter boat Als Spirit where PJ was holding his 3rd radio event for Special Music Radio.

PJ had suggested to Dee Dee many months ago that it would be a fun idea if she could take part in the event and to his delight she agreed.  It had been PJ's dream to meet Dee Dee for many years.

PJ takes up the story:

I suggested around a year ago to Dee Dee that it would be great if she could take part in the 2012 event for Special Music Radio.  I never thought she would agree to this but, to my amazement, Dee Dee said she would try to attend the event and the lady didn't let me down!  She did attend and it was very exciting indeed as Dee Dee and her husband Henry Marsh of the band Sailor arrived at the charter boat Als Spirit around midday on Wednesday 9th May.

I helped Dee Dee on board and introduced everyone to Dee Dee and Henry and quickly showed them the on-board studio located in the wheelhouse of the boat.
At the Ship Inn

We then all set off for a splendid pub meal further along the harbour at The Ship Inn.  Everyone got on very well and the conversations were flowing as we waited for our meals.  I was a little on edge knowing that one of my greatest idols was sitting next to me, but Dee Dee soon put me at ease with her warm personality. I must add that Dee Dee looked very stylish and very beautiful and that Henry Marsh is a very interesting man and has a great sense of humour, as indeed has Dee Dee.

We had a table for eight at the pub at the window in the raised area - for anyone who knows the pub.  Although it was raining, we had a lovely harbour view and Dee Dee seemed impressed.

After the meal, we headed back for the boat and, once back on board, Dee Dee, Henry and presenters Mandy and Nancy interviewed our very special guests in the studio.  Everyone else either stayed on the back deck or went over to The Sailors Return pub to take shelter from yet another rain storm.

In the wheelhouse studio, it was very cosy as the rain lashed against the windows (Als Spirit has windows and not portholes ).  Although Mandy and Nancy are not as au fait with the history of Pan's People as most here, they did a great job.  Unlike most paid radio presenters who interview people because its their job to do so, Mandy and Nancy did the interview because they really wanted to and their interest and respect for both Dee Dee and Henry really came across.  In my opinion, it was more like a conversation between a group of friends, rather than your typical radio style interview.

Special Music Radio until recently had its programmes transmitted via Bristol internet station Radio Samantha, but sadly that closed down recently.  I hope the programmes we recorded including the interview will be heard later this year via a planned new internet radio station.

Meeting Dee Dee was a dream come true: she is a lovely and interesting lady.  Everyone was very excited about meeting Dee Dee and Henry but, before we knew it, the time had come for our special guests to have to head back home.  It was sad to say and wave goodbye, but I will always have the lovely memories of meeting Dee Dee and Henry.  I have always liked Sailor's music, especially their album tracks, so it was wonderful to meet Henry as well.

By the way, I'm Lee & Mary Fan on this site but as a radio presenter I'm known as PJ.

Well done PJ!

What a fantastic day you all must have had!  I'm sure everyone here will enjoy reading the story and agree you are one lucky guy!

Wasn't it wonderful of Dee Dee to make the effort to make your dreams come true?!

Fresh Lettuce's picture

Isn't it great that dreams sometimes do come true, and that that means for grown-ups too. Meeting our heroes is not usually possible, well done Dee Dee and Henry for being such good sports and well, PJ, what a coup!

I should be able to work this out myself, but in case anybody knows, which instrument did Henry play in the band? I thought that their drummer had a short part in the Dustin Hoffmann film Tootsie, as an English stage director, but no, it wasn't really him.

Even my kids could tell me that.

Yes, There arnt many stars like Dee Dee who take the time to meet a fan and make a dream come true.

What a lovely lady she is.

Dee Dee, if you get to read this, Thank You for taking part and maiking it one of the happiest days of my life.

Just thought I would move this to the top of the pile again. Much more interesting than my comments over on the chat thread.

I find it amazing how many of these dancers are kind hearted enough to make their fan's days so long after the work finished. I bet they never thought that they were signing up for a job for life when they became members of dance troupes.

Thanks for sharing the story of your special day with us LMF. I hope that interview makes it too the airwaves in the not too distant future.

Simon.

Hey L&M Fan - utterly wonderful photos & write up. Don't you think you should now become D D Fan?.LOl!!....what can I say but I am sooooooo impressed.Fabulous Pantastic photos of Dee Dee & the whole Ships crew & wow! L&MF snuggled up real close to gorgeous Dee Dee -am I jealous!? am I what !!! you bet !.

Really interesting to read the day's events & a slap up meal at 'The Ship's Inn' . Then  all on board 'Als Spirit' for the radio Interview.I bet Henry was happy him being a former 'Sailor' (geddit!! lol).Dee Dee looks really pleased & does seem to have had a splendid time as everyone does.

So I really look forward to hearing this interview - hoping a link will be provided on here sometime in the future.

Well done L&MF & thankyou for an excellent occasion which is lovely to see on here - The place to be for all the latest Pan's People news & views.

Thank You Flight14 for your kind comments.

Yes, it was truely wonderful to meet Dee Dee and Henry, both lovely people.

The pub meal was a lot of fun, I felt so proud to be sat next to Dee Dee, the pub The Ship In is very Nautical with lovely ship lamps and Portholes in the doors...so yes, I guess our Star Sailor ( sorry about that ) Henry felt right at home.

I was too excited to eat all of my meal, lol.

I kept it pretty much a secret about Dee Dee and Henry visiting Weymouth and it was lovely that it was nice and private for the special guests to enjoy their meal and have an enjoyable converstation with everyone.

The weather wasnt too good, but it wasnt very far to walk back to the boat for the interview, unfortunatly, the wheelhouse where we had the studio set up isnt very big so not everyone could fit in, I think have of the DJs ended up over the road from the boat in The Sailors Return ( maybe thats a good sign that Henry will someday return to Weymouth with Dee Dee ).

I must say what good sports our lovely guests were, they were really having a great time and they really felt like part of the crew of Special Music Radio.

When we held the first event in Weymouth back in Sept 2007, I had no idea of what magic would lie ahead for the 3rd event.

Hopefully, some of the programmes will be heard before too long.

Pure Magic ! L&MF . Dee Dee looks really beautiful.Wow it must have been a dream come true for you to meet her & the photos look wonderful & you can almost feel the waves bobbing & the ship's bell clanging.Thankyou for sharing this lovely meeting with us all L&MF.......

All we needed was Ed 'Stewpot' Stewart to turn up with his eyepatch & say "Oh arr me hearties!" LOL!......

Lee and Mary Fan's picture

Thanks for that, lol, yes, Ed Stewart would of been great to have on board with us.....that would of taken him back to his Radio London ( Big L ) days in the 1960s.

I dont think Als Spirit has a ships bell, if it did, that would of taken me back to the days I spent on board Radio Carolines ship Ross Revenge between 1991 - 2005, Caroline is famous for its Top of the hour ships bell jingle....maybe we should of used a bell jingle....now thats an idea for next year.

Ive just re-writen this repley as my last one was gobblygook as I was watching Top Of The Pops at the same time as typeing...must of been the lovely Legs & Co. making me lose concerntation, lol.

What a fantastic story - it's great to know that dreams can come true! Dee Dee looks stunning. You've done yourself - and the website - proud.

Great photos. too.

Dee Dee falls into that unique category of being a celebrity that is still down-to-earth and prepared to take time out for her fans.

Thanks L & MF  and thanks Dee Dee

Lee and Mary Fan's picture

I remember standing on the back deck waiting for Dee Dee & Henry to arrive with my stomach turning over with nerves like a Cement Mixer!!, once they arrived, most of those feelings ended as both Dee Dee were so friendly and down to earth, I only had the feeling of excitment.

I can now reveal......I had some Promos and Jingles produced for this very website which were featured on every programme we produced, all recorded onto Minidiscs.

Before we arrived at Weymouth, the Presenters asked me what music format are we going to use, my repley was your choice, just play what you feel is right, so we had a fine mixture of great music from the late 1960s to the present day, quality pop, soft rock, 1970s soul & disco, Indie pop/rock hits and album tracks.....light years away from your every day radio stations that play the same music day in...day out.

Gary's picture

That's great news about the promos and jingles, L & MF.  You've done something really special for the website, and no-one can take any credit but yourself. Well done, mate. You've always been very loyal to this website and the Weymouth event just proves how far your loyalty goes.

Lee and Mary Fan's picture

Thanks Gary,

Well, its the least I can do for a website I love and the members I have made friends with, Im proud to promote and incorperate the site into the programmes.

Lee and Mary Fan's picture

If anyone is wondering what Henry is holding in the picture, its the latest Radio Caroline T Shirt.

panfan's picture

We'll all look forward to hearing the programmes in due course. I know a lot of thought and planning has gone into it!

I was wondering, is this boat permanently moored, as when you said the studio was in the wheelhouse I wondered if there was still a ship's wheel there, or has it all been stripped out?

Lee and Mary Fan's picture

No, Als Spirit isnt permanently moored up, its a fully working Weymouth Charter boat, my studio set up was housed on the boats wheelhouse Table and built into a MDF mobile unit which is used for events, this year we had speakers on the back deck which was fun for the crew on the back deck.

Yes, there is a small, modern boat steering wheel, but nothing like you see on old ships.

Last year we set out to sea for around five hours, so Special Music Radio went Offshore, although the programmes never went out live, they were put out a week later on the Internet by the now defunt Radio Samantha.

JEZ's picture

you lucky man ,lee and mary fan ,what a wonderful experience it must have been to meet dee dee in person ,im very pleased this event happened for you , a nice, good bloke like you deserved this wonderful experience ,well done mate

Lee and Mary Fan's picture

Thank You Jez,

It was so hard keeping this a secret for so long.

This years event is dedicated not only to Pans People/all TOTP dancers but to all the members at panspeople.com and that sentiment comes from my heart.

I tried to remeber everyone I corrispond with in the Hellos/dedications, I have a terrible memory, so anyone I left out was only due to me being a scatterbrain....I had writen a very long list of members and I forgot to bring it to Weymouth along with a couple of important Jingles!!.

Nice to hear from you Jez.

Suefan's picture

Good stuff L&MF.  Great to read about your fantastic day.

Scrooge McDuck's picture

Well done, LMF! Sometimes you just have to ask! As usual I am jealous, lol, but I still hope I will be able to hear this broadcast one day. Just watching those pictures let my mind wander and imagine I'd be there too!

panfan's picture

Don't worry guys, LMF has very generously allowed us to upload the interview here.  Once the editing is finished, a copy will wend its way to me, and I'll get it up for you all to hear.

Jase's picture

Well done PJ for pulling the coup of the decade, and fulfilling a lifelong dream while sharing it with us here!

Cracking photo's too, I can't imagine how good it must have felt for you to meet Dee Dee. Meeting someone who you admire can be very exciting but sometimes nervy, and the experience while usually over within minutes leaves you with a cherished memory which lasts a lifetime.

But to spend the afternoon, at your invitation, with Dee Dee and have dinner too is off the scale! I don't think I could have eaten a mouthful.

Dee Dee sure does look gorgeous, classy and so very stylish. Even if you didn't know who she is, you would know she is somebody (if that makes sense!).

Very cool to have Henry from Sailor there too, one of the more memorable acts from the 70's.

I'm looking forward to hearing the interviews, and of any future adventures!

Nice one PJ!

It's all been said but congratulations to you L&MF and thanks so much for sharing this special day with the gracious Dee Dee and Henry.  You deserve a "Glass of Champagne" or actually the whole darn bottle

Thank You to each of you who have added such lovely and kind comments about my artical, it really means a lot to me.

We had the boat Als Spirit on hire for three days, Dee Dee and Henry joinned us on the final day, so it was something to look forward to for the last day.

I was amazed by the tallent of the presenters Mandy, Nancy, Iain and Paul who produced some fabulous programmes and added far more imagination than msot everyday radio presenters, an interesting music selction and some micky taking of each other.

Im not up to the high standard of the mentioned presenters, but I did my best, I am quite a shy person and to sit there and announce a dedication to Sue, Mary and Dee Dee ( which I did by the way ), wasnt easy, my heart was pounding and I was trying hard not to get tongue tied as I said Hello to the girls, but it was fun, people walking by along the Harbour every so often stopped and watched as they wondered what on earth was going on, I had a set of audio speakers on the back deck.

The picture Panfan has used for the News Story Banner I have just had enlarged to poster size and have had it framed, I think Dee Dee looks so stunning and to see her sat at my studio mixer is just mind blowing.

Once again Thanks for all the lovely comments : )

I'm pleased everything went well, Lee and Mary Fan. Dee Dee looks especially lovely in that picture. It won't happen in this life but I remain hopeful of A Wonderful Time Up There, as Pat Boone might say, when the time comes. Including the chance to see those missing shows, of course.

Fellow Top of the Pops legend Jimmy Savile visited my High School once (William Gladstone in North West London) but I didn't get to speak to him. I also remember the Spanish guitarist Juan Martin performing for us. Both Late 1970s, I guess.

Love and Best Wishes to Dee Dee and Henry if they see this account of your special day.

Lee and Mary Fan's picture

Thanks Cornershop,

It went far better than I ever imagined.

The event took many months of planning, the final few weeks esp, I was very busy, thats why I havent been so active on the site, its been frustrating as Ive wanted to comment on the many fabulous items which has been added to the site but just havent had the time, that is about to change.

Please keep on finding all those rare treats Cornershop.

I'm so thrilled for you, PJ.

It's fantastic how Dee Dee agreed to your request and made the day out for you and the others so special. :)

Weymouth is also a lovely part of the south of England.  I've been there on occasions in the past and always enjoyed my visits there.  I must turn back the clock and re-visit the town again.

If you're reading this forum, Dee Dee, thanks for making PJ's day so happy and enjoyable. :)

Hi Claire,

Thank You for your nice comments, yes, it was really lovely of Dee Dee to come along and take part, but thats the kind of person Dee Dee is - thoughtful and kind.

I am pleased you also like Weymouth, my favourite area is the Harbour.

I am still waiting for my friend Mandy to edit and remix the interview with Dee Dee, once its ready I will it to Panfan.

You just see some more pictures from the event in coming weeks : )

Always a pleasure to read your comments.

Likewise to you with your comments.

It’s a joy to be here to post and read messages, see photos and footage.

I hope you get to meet Dee Dee again one day.  You never know, but I’m delighted you enjoyed your day with her.

I must take a trip to Weymouth again asap.  It’s a while since I’ve been there, but a very peaceful part of the country.

I look forward to your friend Mandy’s edit and remix of the Dee Dee interview and the pictures from the event in due course. :)
