BBC Radio Feature: "Top of the Pops Playback" with Shaun Tilley
Just to let everyone know that Shaun Tilley will be presenting a series to be broadcast on BBC regional radio stations entitled "TOTP Playback", in which, he says: "we pick a random edition of the show and get the memories of the original host or somebody who performed on it. We've interviewed 20 or so DJs and roughly the same amount of pop stars." The programme is due to run for 52 weeks.
I put him in touch with some of the dancers, and Sue and Lulu were interviewed last week for the show. Shaun will plug PP.com on those programmes by way of thanks, which is very kind of him! So hopefully after exposure on BBC radio, we'll get some more members!
He's also promised me a pre-broadcast copy of the programmes featuring the dancers, which I'll make available here. Another exclusive for us!
Thanks, Shaun!

Shaun Tilley
Excellent news, sounds like you are really building up some momentum with pp.com now Panfan.
I am probably showing my ignorance as I had not heard of Shaun Tilley as these days I tend to just listen to the likes of Bob Harris and Mike Harding on Iplayer while I am working. So I Googled Shaun and found this link http://www.shauntilley.co.uk/about/index.html that tells you a bit about him.
Simon.
Wow.This will be an amazing
Wow.This will be an amazing radio broadcast.Dave Lee Travis will probably have been interviewed cos he was speaking only a few days ago about the death of Davy Jones of The Monkees.
im looking forward to hearing
im looking forward to hearing this radio show ,and i really hope the gojos and pans people routines get a mention on some of the shows ,do you have any info panfan if any of the gojos or pans will be interviewed on other shows for the radio series
TOTP Playback
Hi Jez
I think if I remember rightly, Shaun said he'd only be able to feature the dancers on two programmes, and is focusing on Pan's and Legs, but I did suggest to him covering the Gojos too, and he said they'd probably only manage Jo Cook for the 60s.
I haven't spoken to him since January, but I can certainly ask him who will be featured if you'd like. It'll be on my to do list, so I will report back at some stage.
Thanks panfan ,how good it
Thanks panfan ,how good it would be though if the dancers could give some info on the show about some of those wiped routines that they performed on a certain weeks show that they are covering, that none of us really remember ,that is why when dee dee said the photo last week was of another day routine it was really good to hear ,because its a routine of a pans routine that has not been recalled by any of the pans dancers before
Great news
Really looking forward to hearing Sue and Lulu's recollections,it'll be very interesting.
Glenn
I've been catching up with

He's already interviewed Sue and Lulu as we know, and will be interviewing Dee Dee a week on Tuesday.
i wonder what edition they
i wonder what edition they are gonna cover when dee dee is interviewed,i really hope they cover a lost episode and dee dee recalls her memory of one of those missing routines that none of us really remember ,but im sure it will be brilliant with whatever episode from totp they recall

Transmission dates for TOTP Playback
Sorry Suefan, not yet, he said he'd let us know as soon as he could. But Shaun has very generously promised us advance recordings on CD, so you'll be able to hear them via our website before broadcast anyway.
Thanks for your reply Panfan,
Thanks for your reply Panfan, I shall look forward to both very much.
Thanks panfan ,i wonder if
Thanks panfan ,i wonder if the other pans dance on popscenes list is correct sonny and chers all i ever need is you ,i wonder if dee dee will be talking about this routine as well ,i really hope so ,as its a clip that is wiped it would be nice to hear her memories of the routine
Would be great to know what
Would be great to know what Dee Dee's opinion of 'The Persuaders' promo from 20th January 1972 is?.it's a firm favourite of many of us on here.
Sonny & Cher?
We don't really have any confirmation of this yet, do we, maybe it's another Popscene assumption, so hopefully we'll find out on the show!
Playback date
Just got this from Shaun:
The Pilot edition of 'TOP OF THE POPS PLAYBACK' is on BBC Radio across the South West THIS MONDAY 9th April between 6-7pm. Shaun Tilley will be trawling through the BBC archive to remember a classic edition of the legendary television chart show and on this occasion, he's joined by DAVE LEE TRAVIS and together they'll be remembering his first time hosting the programme on the 8th November 1973. Dave will be reminiscing about the artists and the hit songs which at that time were 'Top Of The Pops'!!
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00q7bmm
Thanks panfan for the info ,i
Thanks panfan for the info ,i wonder if DLT ,can remember the pans people routine from his first totp ,im hoping he mentions it ,as it is one of those mystery disc performances on most totp databases ,it would be brilliant if he can remember and confirm pans peoples dance on this show ,the disc entries on the 8/11/73 edition are dynamite by mud ,helen wheels by wings and photograph by ringo starr ,so i would think its a choice of the ringo starr or wings disc that would have been the pans disc for that episode,i know a couple of totp databases list the helen wheels song as the dancers disc for that week ,but it would be good to get actuall confirmation from someone who was there at the time
TOTP playback
If people would like, I can easily record and make available for download/listening here any or all the editions of this series, just let me know!
if you could make this
if you could make this available on this site ,that would be great please panfan

Hi Panfan,i wonder will Shaun be releasing any photos of himself and the dancers.?
Glenn
Hi Glenn, yes I've been
Hi Glenn, yes I've been promised some photos, so stay tuned!
Some contempory pics, would
Some contempory pics, would be much appreciated I'm sure, but part of me doesn't really want to see any, I've liked to think that, Lulu & Sue look every bit as photogenic now, but what If I took one look of the new photographs & my illusions we're shattered, I'd be absolutely gutted.
So I've decided that while I must see these shots, I've had to seriously lower my expectations, that said, Babs, Dee Dee & Ruth, are all still very glamourous looking, & with respect, are older, so that raises my hopes about Lulu & Sue again!

Is this one of a whole series
Is this one of a whole series of programmes, from what I've read on the main BBC website, this evening's programme has DLT as a guest, or is this just a one-off with differents segments of the programme featuring different guests including Lulu, Sue, & Dee Dee?
Justin
Playback series
Hi Justin, I believe it's a series of 52 programmes, with DLT being the interviewee for the first, and the dancers would feature in subsequent programmes.
It is just the pilot tonight, and transmission dates have still to be finalised, so there will be a delay before the others are broadcast unfortunately.
Wow!, so If each one goes out
Wow!, so If each one goes out on a weekly basis it'll take 'till about this time next year to broadcast, with each episode featuring different people involved with TOTP, I can see that this'll be a weekly appointment for the next year!
With so many of the TOTP alumni no longer with us though, it could've been an even longer series with all of those still being alive as well!
I'd have loved one of these editions to have featured Flick, without whom, I don't think we'd be having the sort of conversations we're having on a website like this one!
Justin
Sorry Justin, my previous
Sorry Justin, my previous post got truncated. Yes, it looks like a fantastic series, and we can play our part by helping it come to pass, as tonight's programme is just a taster and future transmissions have yet to be finalised with the Beeb.
So what we need to do after tonight is to write to BBC Devon and say how much we enjoyed it and how much we are looking forward to more of the series, so when will they be transmitting further episodes? It seems a little listener input might be required to apply a little pressure to get things moving to allow the other programmes to be aired.
I'm just wondering why this
I'm just wondering why this isn't on Radio 2, seeing as this series will have national interest, what is on the nation's favoutite radio channel today, seems by & large pointless, I mean Annie Nightingale on Radio 2?, despite her great age, she's still far better suited to Radio 1, she obviously still enjoy's the "Trance" music whatever she plays on there for allbeit a couple of hours a week, starting at stupid o'clock.
Sorry for digressing, but Shaun Tilley's series is what Radio 2 was made for surely, rather than being tucked away on a small BBC local station, that nobody outside of Devon can hear, except on-line!
Justin
Good points there. I too was
Good points there. I too was surprised it was just for Radio South West, as Radio 2 has proved ideal for these sort of programmes. Perhaps the BBC are wanting to test the water for demand first, as maybe it's seen as being a niche audience, or too in depth (at an hour) for general audiences, but I'm grasping for explanations.
Let's hope tonight's programme will go down a treat and stimulate further demand. It's a great idea for a series, and with the passage of time - coupled with the loss of so many earlier TOTPs - these sort of retrospective shows contribute valuably to the history of our popular culture.
First playback
I've got the first episode recorded and it's uploading now. I had to pop out in the middle, but I heard reference to PP dancing to Paul McCartney and Wings when I returned. A great programme and let's hope - indeed we need to do our bit by writing to the BBC to ensure - that there'll be more to come!
That was Helen Wheels,
That was Helen Wheels, presumably that PP routine's no longer available in the official archives, wiped just like the TOTP edition where it featured!
Justin
im looking forward to
im looking forward to listening to this show ,thanks for uploading it panfan for us ,i hope dlt does remember pans dancing to helen wheels ,that would be another definite entry for the pp database
We'll have to listen again,
We'll have to listen again, Jez, as I can't remember if it was DLT recalling it, but I have a feeling it was Shaun mentioning it in passing.
The mp3 has been timing out when FTPing, so I've created a slidshow and will upload to You Tube instead.
Playback 1 now up: DLT's PP memories
DLT talks of his memories of PP about 35:00, introducing the Wings number they danced to at 36:30:
Video won't play!
"This video is unavailable."
That's the message I get when I try to play it, I can't!
Justin
Sorry Justin, I was a little
Sorry Justin, I was a little quick off the mark, posting it when it was finishing processing. It's ok now!
You Tube won't let you upload pure audio mp3s, so I had to make a slideshow with the audio as a soundtrack, and upload it as a video file, so you've got a never ending loop of a couple dozen DLT images grabbed via Google!
Sadly, there's intermittent clicking interference as with the Dee Dee Wilde recording last week. Not sure what's up with that....
Yep, It works a treat, thanks
Yep, It works a treat, thanks on behalf of everybody else here!
Justin
Hope it lasts there, as I had
Hope it lasts there, as I had about a dozen notifications from YT about the various rights holders for music in the programme!
Yeah, you have to watch out
Yeah, you have to watch out for that, the worst case senario would see you have your YT account suspended!
What gets my goat is that there are far worse things posted by other YT account holders and YT seems to turn a blind eye!
Justin
Panfan thanks for uploading
Panfan thanks for uploading the first TOTP Playback. It made a very interesting and enjoyable listen and has whetted my appetite for Sue and Lulu's edition so thanks again.
No problem guys! While the
No problem guys! While the iplayer version is up for the next week, can someone try to listen to it there and see if they (don't) get the same interference I get? I don't know if it's a universal issue or not.
Helen Wheels
Thanks from me too PanFan as I can't get iPlayer to work here in the Land of the Beaver. Pity DLT couldn't recall more about the Pans People routine itself but good to hear his banter and memories. I liked the bit about Lyndsey DePaul's dirty jokes; now I have a whole new respect for her.
Rusty
I noticed the funny noises on
I noticed the funny noises on the live BBC Devon streaming, ranging from light tapping, to the chinks of glass objects to footsteps, & during the talkie bits, I sure that there was music playing in the background, which I don't think mean't to be a part of the programme.
I wonder if the web stream of BBC Devon, is simply an off-air re-broadcast of the 103.4 MHz fm, tx @ North Hessary Tor, that was the frequency details given on the TuneIn Radio screen while I was listening, if that's the case, the signal where the studio payout is based must be rather weak, maybe another channel on a nearby frequency was bleeding over 103.4, causing a knock-on effect with the web-stream!
Justin
I've just been on another
I've just been on another website, the "clicking" problem, appears to be caused by a fault with the main web-streaming play-out circuits at Maidenhead in Berksihire which supply web audio to all BBC services outside of London, hence BBC London is unaffected, so is BBC National radio & the BBC's external radio services, such s the World Service.
The techies @ ATOS who over-see the workings of the web-streaming have been looking in to it all for several weeks now, it's affecting just about all provincial BBC local radio services, not just Radio Devon, certain vital components of the web playout system at Maidenhead need replacing, so 'till that happens, we'll still be getting these strange noises, while listening to TOTP Playback on-line!
