Cherry on 'Top of of the Pops'

I've finally got round to choosing the captures but, as with Flick and Louise's TOTP threads, am struggling with the introduction. I'll get there eventually.

Cherry at the beginning of the Pan's People routine for One of These Nights (The Eagles):

Broadcast 28th August 1975, when I Can't Give You Anything (But My Love), by The Styistics, was No.1. Coincidentally, their version of Can't Help Falling in Love was the first Ruby Flipper routine, which is where this is from:

Broadcast 6th May 1976, when Brotherhood of Man were #1 with Save Your Kisses for Me.

Nice work Cornershop, I really like the 2nd picture with the flower in Cherrys hair

Yes the second one is lovely, reminds me of a Hawaian dancer or something!

We haven't heard a lot about Cherry here recently so maybe this will encourage her fans to speak out. (I think one of the new members is a Cherry fan, so here's your chance!)

I'm a Cherry fan -  I just love watching her hair when she dances which often looks totally amazing... guess I have a Cherry hair fetish - nice screencaps - thanks :)

The other day I was in a Taxi and got into a conversation with the driver about music, this progrssed to talking about Top Of The Pops and Pans People, the driver said - My favourite Pans people dancer was always Cherry, what a lovely little face!, I couldnt agree more : )

I remember reading on the old Freeserve site in the FAQ: why don't you have a poll about your favourite PP? And he said, well does anyone not have Cherry as their favourite??

Maybe we should start an affiliate programme with referal fees for recruiting new members you encounter (!!!)

Great Idea Panfan,

That sounds good....lets start recruiting, lol.

I agree Cherry has beautiful hair, but what I really like about her is the funny faces she pulls whenever the camera does a closeup on her.

Who couldnt feel cheered up by seeing such a cute, sweet smile as Cherrys, lovely captures of a lovely lady.

Cherry looking wonderfull in Love On A Mountain Top and Get Down (What a lucky dog)

Morning Glory came to mind:

That's Patti in the background.

Cherry's expressions in Itchycoo Park are a bit too weird for me but I do like her Charlie Chaplin impression in You Won't Find Another Fool Like Me (at least I think she was copying him).

Other favourite moments include that cute close-up of her at the start of Love's Theme, the playful punch in one of The Two Ronnies routines, and a perfectly timed look to the camera as she claps her hands during There's a Kind of Hush. This occurs at 0.53, inbetween Sue and Mary's solos:

Pan's People: There's A Kind Of Hush / The Carpenters (TOTP, 08 April 1976)

Thanks Cornrshop,

This was my favourite Cherry moment ever, the mishap with her costume and lovely hair and the cute expression she gave the camera was priceless, I ended up buying the song Morning Glory on cd because of this wonderful routine.

Well I'm a huge Cherry Fan as I think everyone knows! I have to agree with ll62 regarding Cherry's hair and also Simon O about her funny faces. And sorry cornershop15 but for me it's the faces that she pulls that makes Itchycoo Park :)

Another routine where the best close-up is right at the start:

Much nicer than the superimposed images that come later:

With a sadly-blurred Sue in the background.

Broadcast 20th March 1975, when Telly Savalas was No. 1 with his spoken version of If.

Not a favourite routine but I grew to like it more while looking for the best moments.

Cherry looks especially lovely in that first image, Cornershop.

Have Moved the Screencap of Minder to the correct thread sorry didn't know it was there

I have a program of a play that cherry did in 80s somewhere I'll have to dig it out.

cornershop15's picture

Thanks for moving the capture, Andy . I wish I knew how to do that.

I've been trying to think of the play you mentioned. Cherry was in the four part Love Story A Chance to Sit Down,  starring Jan Francis and Del Henney. Not sure if that's the one you mean but I'll post an article at our subject's 'Miscellaneous' thread in a moment.

cornershop15's picture

Thanks for your replies. The Minder capture should really be at Cherry's Miscellaneous Appearances thread, where I posted last week - a repeat of her Morecambe and Wise cameo. Perhaps both episodes are on YouTube?

I watched one of my favourite Top of the Pops clips again last week - Chicory Tip performing their No. 1 Son of My Father. This turned out to be a different upload than the one I'm used to and I was staggered to discover that the song preceded a delightful and significant moment in Pan's People history - the unveiling of Cherry as the latest member:

Chicory Tip - Son Of My Father (HQ) |Christmas TOTP '72|  (followed by mystery gift)

My selection of favourite images ... I'm sure the others knew all the time she was in there!:

I like Ruth's brief glance at the camera here.

A Christmas gift to remember. Thank goodness this survives:

I had to include a better one of darling Louise:

Little Cherry with 'Big Babs':

A Star Is Born:

I was quite affected by this 'in-depth' study of Cherry's lovely introduction to the legendary show. It made me fall in love with her again. This often happens when I'm trying to produce the best images. With Flick it was her close-up in Stoney End. I feel more involved with subjects on these occasions

Magnificent & Pantastic photos of beautiful Cherry. Thanks for these treats Cornershop15.

Sorry F14 couldn't help myself.  What a great entry by Cherry and I recall a little tinge of disappointment every time I opened one of my own Xmas presents after 1972
