I came across this image and thought it ideal for starting a Caption Competition with!

At least one looks slightly perturbed at having candles in her hair: what thinketh they?  Answers on a postcard, please, to....

Suefan's picture

Hey Flick, this thing's starting to get on my wick!

panfan's picture

Good one SF! You wonder what the Health and Safey guys would say now. I haven't seen that routine yet - was it real candles, or bulbs?

mojo2007's picture

I can tell you that are not candles from my school play days. Not only would they be dangerous but the slightest movement puts them out. They may have been battery powered but likely to be too heavy. I suggest they are on long mains leads, as used in 1930's musicals when dancing with lite up violins and other stunning dances

panfan's picture

Yes, real candles would have been a no no!  They all look like electric ones!

Suefan's picture

I think the routine is still on OFTD although I haven't checked recently.  It is a very sedate dance but with the dry ice used to create the impression of a frosty cold garden it is difficult to tell how the electric lights are being powered.  Perhaps Sue might remember.  Poor girl - she is going to be busy racking her brains with all these questions.

Lee and Mary Fan's picture

I just love Marys expression, I think the girls are thinking - How could Flick do this to us!!.

Wonderful picture.

Any more entries?!

Another bright idea from the costume department !

I've just watched that routine again - for I Only Have Eyes For You - and discovered this was the second version (Christmas 1975).  I had thought it was Lee and Mary's debut. The original must be yet another lost performance. We can only hope there's a copy of it somewhere.

Anyway, the routine and caption remind me of a photograph that's been in my collection for years. Was Flick influenced by this tradition?:

Lucia Queen, 1931

The blonde girl who acted as this year's Lucia Queen and rode through the streets of Stockholm wearing a crown of candles. The Swedish Christmas tradition dates back to Roman times and derives from the legend of Santa Lucia.

That was interesting Cornershop. Maybe she was influenced by that or similar traditions. Certainly the presence of the wreath marches.

In your old photo (or further back in time) I imagine it _was_ real candles that were used...!

Lucia Queen - is the name Lucia derived from Lux (light), so it means Light Queen / Queen of Light?

Mary  "Are they really going to suspend Flick from that gantry with the long Butane lighter?"

"I Said I was going to wear this"

I suppose Christmas would be as appropriate a time as any to close this particular competition!

I think the winner has to be SueFan with Hey Flick, this thing's starting to get on my wick!"

Well done Sue Fan, wish I had a prize for you!

Here's number two:

Why is Sue so shocked, pray tell?

Suefan's picture

Thanks Panfan and that pic of Sue is a generous prize.  For a caption I offer:

Sue:  "Flipping heck, Flick.  I know your keen on a mixed troup but I do believe Lulu has a boy in her room!"

We'll do the dancing, leave the singeing to others (like Sparks)!

Who better to judge this caption comp but Sue:

They are ALL very amusing, and after much deliberation (!) 1st place goes to Suefan, with a very close 2nd to Gibb1962, which was also very funny ! Well done guys !

So well done Suefan - you've done it again!
