Thankfully it seems the folks at Popscene have tried to make sense of these for their "TOTP Not in Circulation" thread gary mentioned.

We'll have to see which PP routines are still in existence, according to this.  Once I've finished with the RF routine list, I'll get started with PP, so it'll be easier to take stock of all this!

Looking at some of the other items in the catalogue, surely some of it is copies of what the BBC already has (eg Fawlty Towers) so it's not all "lost" stuff?  Any comments about this treasure trove?

panfan's picture

Anyone able to identify any sought after goodies in this sometimes rather cryptic list??

Boogiebox's picture

Hi Panfan

As the PVL and RTA have the same footage, I'll reply under this existing topic.

Do any of you have any idea which song the walk on actor and actress are appearing in?:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1zB76ApJGs (1:19) - In b/w, so could be but not confirmed as from 1973?

Is it The Carpenters' Yesterday Once More from 20/7/73?

The two preceding songs in the montage from 20/7/73 are Albert Hammond's Free Electric Band then Nazareth's Bad Bad Boy.

Just one second's worth of footage, but I sense there's some sort of romance courting from the clip, which would tie in with The Carpenters love song.

Marvellous compilation Boogiebox. Thanks for linking it. 3:59 to 4:22 K.C. & The Sunshine Band 'That's The Way I Like It'   Thursday 21st August 1975 & Cozy Powell 'Dance With The Devil'  Thursday 17th January 1974.

Boogiebox's picture

Hi Peter

These clips of performances, films and Pan's People dance routines are one of the Rare TV Archive uploads. :)

These are the same people who own the Abba - So Long performance from TOTP that was broadcasted on 5/12/74 and uploaded by a few people after Abba Fanclub members paid £5 each to reach the RTA's target of £300.  A nice piece of footage of the quartet.

It's a dream come true that we have Pan's People dancing to KC and Cozy among other presumed missing clips that exist privately. :)

Following on from the other montage, here's some more clips from the RTA:

Scrooge McDuck's picture

Hi Claire,

very short footage indeed but my guess is, it's Tony Orlando (in the middle) & Dawn (the ladies left and right), from 17/8/73 just like the two following clips, Geordie and New York City (Pans People).

Boogiebox's picture

Hi Scrooge McDuck

You could be right.

I've had a quick look at this site and there were three female singers, although, like with the dance routines, sometimes one or more of the dancers appears later in the dances, but it certainly looks like Tony Orlando.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Orlando_and_Dawn

I wish the footage were a little longer, but this is a nice bonus to the other footage. :)

Here's the song Say, Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose followed by the point a still photo shows presumably Tony with two ladies on either side of him, which may or may not be the same ones as in the RTA footage, as it's too brief.

Having seen the sub-links to the Dawn Wikipedia article, Pamela Vincent must have been brought in to replace Telma or Joyce at some point:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telma_Hopkins

"In 1971, Hopkins and Joyce Vincent Wilson were recruited by Tony Orlando to form the vocal group Dawn. (Orlando had released a single, "Candida" -- performed with session vocalists backing him -- in late 1970, under the name Dawn; when the single charted, Orlando found himself needing to assemble an actual backing group to tour and record with.)"

Would the Dawn footage on 17/8/73 have been a promo made especially for Top Of The Pops, rather than an official promo?

31/8/73 may very well have been a repeat of the same film.

The clip is too brief to tell either way, but possibly this triggers a memory with one or more of you who saw the edition or the film at the time of this song:

Hi Glenn

These, also are very good clips. :)

Here's some more:

In this compilation the dance routines are:

Norman Greenbaum - Spirit In The Sky, 27/12/73 (Pan's People)

Paul Davidson - Midnight Rider, 22/1/76 (Pan's People)

Bob Dylan - Baby Stop Crying, 10/8/78 (Legs & Co)

Boogiebox's picture

Hi Glenn

I've come across footage here and there on 123video before featuring Pan's People routines including the 1973 b/w compilation featuring Kenny Everett announcing Paul Simon's Take Me to the Mardi Grass! lol, The Detroit Emeralds' I Think Of You and others, but found this one recently featuring many equally excellent Top Of The Pops clips including Pan's People routines. :)

Agreed about Gill. :)  I'd not heard that song in ages.

Claire

Flight14's picture

Thanks for this compilation Gibb1962. I have spotted the 'Fireball' clip Scrooge identified but what is the  Pan's People routine that starts at 4:24 & ends at 5:03 ? -  39 seconds only.Where is the entire routine video?.Probably from 1972,1973 or 1974.It looks really cool too.

Scrooge McDuck's picture

It's "Ghetto Child" by the Detroit Spinners. About a second (!) of it was also shown on "Tales of Television Center" between "I wanna dance wit 'choo" and "We've only just begun".

Boogiebox's picture

Hi Scrooge McDuck

Is the full line-up and is this the correct running order from the Tales show of Pan's People routines?:

Dawn - Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree

Three Dog Night - Mama Told Me Not To Come (not PP, but the Crowd with Tony Blackburn)

Disco Tex And The Sex-O-Lettes - I Wanna Dance Wit Choo

Detroit Spinners - Ghetto Child (Rehearsal)

The Carpenters - We've Only Just Begun

Kenny Everett - Not PP, but I can't work out which edition this clip is from

First Choice - Smarty Pants

Elton John - Island Girl (Rehearsal)

Jackson Five - The Love You Save

Claire

Scrooge McDuck's picture

Hi Claire,

the running order in ToTC is:

Dawn
Elton John
First Choice
Three Dog Night (crowd and Pan's People!)
Disco Tex
Detroit Spinners
Carpenters

Couldn't find Jackson Five... can anyone help?

Boogiebox's picture

Hi Scrooge McDuck

I'd not seen Pan's People with Three Dog Night.  I've only ever seen a very brief clip of the crowd with Tony Blackburn from 20/8/70.  Suefan once told me that PP weren't in the studio for that song.

I don't know how I got my running order wrong, I must have noted them parrot fashion, but the info matches yours other than that the Jackson Five were also on the show.

I'm intrigued as to which edition the Kenny Everett clip was from.  I think it was colour, from memory, as I don't have the DVD to hand near my computer, but next time I check this or check online for TOTC, I'll double check.  If it was colour, it will more likely be from 1/6/73 where Stealer's Wheel derives from. :)

Claire

pp4ever's picture

The confusion arises from the fact that footage of Pan's performing to "The Love You Save" Jackson Five number has been married/merged with the Three Dog Night track + crowd.

Boogiebox's picture

Hi PP4ever

That explains what happened.  I'd thought there was some dubbing somewhere.  Not sure why the BB merged the two songs together, but it was great to see some rare routines that the BBC originally wiped.

I think Panfan said the BBC hired them from an external source.  Hopefully they're in full in the archive.

I'd imagine the Three Dog Night footage is the same as 13/8/70 but probably that date was minus the crowd, if along the lines of 1976 and 1977 footage where some songs have the whole promo film and on one week they alternate with the crowd, like recently for Rod Stewart's First Cut Is The Deepest.

Also according to Panfan, some other tunes, but not used on Tales, were available to the BBC, so they may also have Zarathustra. :)

Claire

Scrooge McDuck's picture

I had a suspicion that "The Love You Save" would be the dance to the music of "Mama Told Me..." but still I find it strange that the BBC did not use the original song to this performance. Thanks for clearing this up anyway!

Paperboyplod's picture

Maybe, play the routine with the original audio muted, & play Mama Told Me Not To Come by Three Dog Night over it from your itunes library or whatever, & see what it would've been like!

Justin

Boogiebox's picture

Hi Scrooge McDuck

I agree.  I also don't understand why the BBC used a different soundtrack, unless the Jackson Five soundtrack is mute, like Cliff Richard's Visions.  That's the only logical explanation I can think of, but I don't know for sure, but even then, if it were mute, The Love You Save is on CD and could be dubbed from a disc.

Claire

Flight14's picture

Thanks Scrooge. Great song 'Ghetto Child' & that looks like a pretty awesome ,amazing, burgundy,bell-bottomed costume routine there by Pan's People.Another one to add to my 'wants list' .It looks like a rehearsal or test recording added to part of the finished routine?:Thursday 11th October 1973.

Scrooge McDuck's picture

The whole show from 11/10/73 exists at the BBC but in an unedited state with retakes etc.

Flight14's picture

Kenny Everett was the presenter on Thurs 11 Oct 1973 .That makes it double special!.I hope the full video of Pan's People dancing to 'Ghetto Child' will show up somewhere on the World Wide Web some point in future.I wish that the BBC would release the whole unedited video of this show.

Boogiebox's picture

Hi Peter

It sounds like you're also a big fan of Kenny.  He was brilliant, always bringing lots of happiness to viewers and listeners. :)

Ghetto Child is a rehearsal, but as always, Pan's People are spot on in their rehearsals. :)

As I already have a copy of the first of the following pieces of footage, there was no point me downloading it again, but as it's a different download company that I don't recognise, I can be sure it will be a different owner who's uploaded the footage, so safe to post :):

Hopefully a longer clip of Oxygene will surface one day, I think it exists in full somewhere but currently not available online in full length, but still good to have a minute of it, and likewise to the full routine of Do You Wanna Dance.

I lose track of how many programmes show clips, as there are so many, but the "A-Z Of Television" rings a bell. :)

Hi Panfan

Thanks for the link.

I may have seen the show at the time but don't remember it.

Having said that, I've seen a clip on Youtube (besides the Tales Of Television Centre one) of Ghetto Child with a John Peel narration, which must be from the A-Z show.

You have to be Sherlock Holmes to be able to piece together the jigsaw segments of Pan's People rare routines that show up on the unlikely of places.Lol!.Thanks Panfan for locating some more vital seconds of 'Ghetto Child'.Thanks Andy for the screenshot of that routine.Oh yes! Boogiebox ,couldn't agree more about Cuddly Ken.He was funniest of all on the radio.I think something of his talent was lost on television, though.I am pleased that he introduced Pan's People a few times even though he was not employed by the BBC from the mid to late 1970s.(Was actually sacked by them, lol). So I wonder if we will ever get to see the entire rehearsal or final product of 'Ghetto Child' from start to finish?.Maybe a BBC insider will be generous & put it up on a file sharing site?.

Hi Peter

I'm working my way through the compilation.  Like the other one, some great clips.

Kenny was perfect for Top Of The Pops.  His zany presentations made his style of hosting the show some of the most memorable around.  A nice bonus of Kenny (unmuted! lol) introducing Slade's My Friend Stan from 4/10/73.  I didn't hear Kenny on Radio 1 but I believe he was very good. :)

On telly, I always enjoyed the various characters he invented.  Probably the most comical of all was Cupid Stunt.  Done "In the Best possible taste". :D :)

It's a miracle Kenny was still employed by the BBC, given his sackings (with laxity in today's BBC standards, he would have been given just a telling off for breaking the rules, instead of being sacked), but great that he was allowed to host TOTP again after a 6 year break.

It would be good if a BBC insider came forward, as this footage is always great to see, whether in segments or complete. :)

Hi Claire, I used to like 'Captain Kremmen' sci-fi adventure serial by Kenny Everett on Capital Radio on Saturday mornings.I used to tape record 'Capital Radio 194' on tape cassettes in the 1970's & I still have a few cassettes knocking around. On one Roger Scott chases the fade of 'Convoy' by CW Mc Call & says: "Well there's still a lot of 1976 to go but that song gets my award for the best of the year!".I don't know how K E managed to host a BBC-1 show after being sacked by them but he must have pulled a few strings or was in with the TOTP producers or something?.I am mighty glad that he did & introduced Pan's People dancing to Paul Simon's 'Take Me To The Mardi Gras'.I have also seen him introduce an Elton John song, all of this in black & white on reel-to reel Videotape or Videocasettes.Could be that new Colour TV's had no external output or the commercially available Videotape could only record B&W images or that a video camera was pointed at a B&W TV screen.

Boogiebox's picture

Hi Peter

I remember this character also featuring someone from The Benny Hill Show.

I've deduced Kenny will have been introducing a TOTP promo of Elton's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.  I've seen a clip of that recently, in colour, might be on one of those compilations Glenn and I respectively have linked to, so there must be two copies going around, like with some of the Pan's People routines - the BBC has Finders Keepers in colour but the RTA has it in b/w.

Capital Radio.  Yay!  A great station.  A brilliant station in its heyday, very different from today's bland over-commercialised modern day equivalents.

I gather that it wasn't until the mid seventies that televisions had an external phono socket to record from video cassette recorders (with the modern square tapes), so had to be copied directly from a television set.  I think this is what happened when Dick Emery recorded much of 7/11/74.

Claire

Flight14's picture

External Phono Socket. That's what I meant thanks Claire. I read that early Colour TV's didn't have any so impossible to video-record directly but I can't see any reason why 1960's B&W TV's would have an E-P-S anymore than a Colour TV.What seemed to be the vogue was for Video enthusiasts to point a Video Camera at the TV Screen. Many, many 1960's tv extracts on Youtube are clearly done this way because you can actually see the tv frame circling around the cathode ray tube.Tony Blackburn had a Video Tape Recorder & A Video Camera in his bedroom in 1970 as per my 'Fab 208 Annual 1971' .I wonder if he pointed his video camera at his tv set when 'Top Of The Pops' was on & recorded some of the missing Pan's People routines?.We know David Hamilton videotaped some TOTP editions. He kindly let the BBC have all the 'missing' episodes which he presented but I don't think he was willing to give the BBC any other TOTP editions that he may have.We are so grateful to him for Pan's People 'Midnight Rider' routine which we only have thanks to him.

I remember all the 1970's Capital Radio DJ's & their times on air.Dave Cash had his lunchtime 'C-O-D' slot.Kenny Everett on Weekends.Roger Scott teatime 'top 10' phone in.Michael Aspel,Graham Dene,Nicky Horne, etc.etc.

I'd always assumed that TV's with a UHF tuner could simply connect to any video machine via the TV aerial port, with the Rx instead being plugged into the VCR itself, & you'd simply tune in the TV channels on the VCR's tuner, I'd need to see what sort of machine actually required you to point a video camera at the TV.
Presumably all VCR could record in colour, so a video camera must've been pointed at a monochrome TV in order to actually record in B/W.
I wonder if that TV was VHF only, designed for the old 405-line TV system, in which case it would've been impossible to connect a VCR anyways, without an RF modulator designed for VHF band I/III!

Justin

Flight14's picture

Thanks Pbp. I am trying to figure out why so many of these private videos of Pan's People from the early to mid-70s are in black & white as partly concluded that video cameras were being pointed at black & white tv sets.Pre-1967 most tv sets were VHF 405 lines.By the 1970s all new tvs were UHF.

Paperboyplod's picture

BBC Two, which launched in 1964 was UHF-only of course, & so UHF TV's would've been available to buy as early as then, but would had to have been dual-band, as IIRC BBC One & ITV didn't go on UHF until they went colour in 1969' two years after BBC Two.
In the case of the TV's having video cameras pointing at them, these TV's were most likely the older B/W VHF (405-lines) TV's that were incomparable with VCR's!

Justin

panfan's picture

Aren't the black and white videos (at last the time coded ones) internal BBC copies used for editing purposes?

If people pointed cine cameras at TVs, I imagine they wouldn't have recorded sound, unless they were pricey models? Does sound seem like it was recorded from a TV, dubbed, or the original one?

Paperboyplod's picture

It's quite possible that a microphone was plugged into the video camera, & simply pointed at the TV, although most regular microphones would've picked up heaps of ambient background noise, so I'd imagine that the audio would've been fairly distorted!

Justin

Boogiebox's picture

Hi Justin

This might be why there's some background noise during Kenny Everett's intro to Pan's People dancing to Paul Simon on 22/6/73.  That edition could very well have been recorded from a VHF television.

From "on their plates" you can hear some kind of distorsion and slightly on the Pan's People dance.

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xasw4b_pan-s-people-mardi-gras_music

There is also variable distorsion on The Detroit Emeralds' I Think Of You from 31/8/73, New York City's I'm Doin' Fine Now and Limmie & The Family Cookin's You Can Do Magic.  The music distorsion could be replaced by dubbed clean soundtracks from a CD, but would need to be turned monaural to match in with that TOTP was still in mono for many years at that point.

Hi Peter

What's an E-P-S?

It looks like this was commonplace before the mid-1970s or possibly sooner, depending on if the televisions were UHF or VHF, as Justin has observed.

At least a wiped 1970 Val Doonican show was recorded from a 405 VHF set in Ireland from the long-running, lamented golden era where ITV jingles preceded the programmes:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lPSBax2QsE

I think the 15/2/68, 6/6/68, 27/2/69 and early 1970 b/w TOTPs were too, as I've noticed slight camera shaking, most notably on the chart rundowns, which must mean those were editions were also recorded with a camera pointing at a TV screen.  This must have been due to no phono sockets being available.

I sadly suspect Tony Blackburn must have wiped his editions, as no info has come to light, but I'll hopefully be proved wrong, as he would be a good source, if he has any editions of TOTP.

The only David Hamilton ediiton that's unaccounted for is 2/9/76.  In case David is reading, I'd prefer not to say why, but basically, a situation totally beyond his control affected his presentations of that edition, so he probably had the show at one time but may have junked it.

I remember all those Capital Radio presenters.  Kenny and Roger sadly no longer with us, but all very memorable presenters. :)  A children's show that comes to mind from that era was Hullabaloo, and the late Kerry Juby was also a presenter.

I believe Dave Cash works for BBC Radio nowadays, and Michael Aspel is retired, but do Graham Dene and Nicky Horne still broadcast on radio these days?

Claire

Paperboyplod's picture

I've done some research on Graham Dene, I think that he was last heard on Radio Jackie, but appears to have left there.
Nicky Horne can be heard on Planet Rock, weekdays 18:00-21:00!

Justin

Boogiebox's picture

Hi Justin

Thanks for your research. :)

Graham did the breakfast show at 6am on weekdays on Capital while Nicky was on at 9pm on weekdays presenting "Your Mother Wouldn't Like It", similarly titled to one of my most favourite Suzi Quatro songs Your Mama Won't Like Me. :D

Ah, Radio Jackie, an ex-pirate radio station that reopened and became legal about 10 years ago.  I'll listen out for Nicky and see if I can also find Graham, who I assume is still broadcasting, but like some other presenters, when they move around, and as some web sites are out of date, it can be like a needle in a haystack trying to trace which stations they've moved to! lol

Both great presenters. :)

Claire

Thanks Justin & Claire for the info on Graham Dene & Nicky Horne. My other 'Capital Radio' favourites Kenny Everett & Roger Scott are both passed away.

I think we should start  'Radio Pan's People' ? - the tracks would all be songs they danced to.

Hi Peter

I've just found a further update on Graham Dene:

"In April 2012, Dene was one of the launch presenters on The Wireless - an Internet-based radio station operated by Age UK and aimed at older people throughout the UK".

As he was a launch presenter, he might not be there now, but I found this while looking just now.

Some presenters move around to several stations that it's often difficult to know if or where they're broadcasting.  Graham did the Breakfast Show on weekdays on Capital in the 194 era.

I think I've read somewhere that David Symonds was the original Capital Breakfast Show host, during the Capital 539 era of 1973 to 1975.  David also presented TOTP 3 times in 1968.

"Radio Pan's People" sounds a fun idea. :)

Claire

Flight14's picture

Thanks. It's good to know Graham Dene is still doing the rounds so to speak.Yep he did the breakfast show & Michael Aspel took over at 9am.

Boogiebox's picture

This has got me all intrigued now, as to which date 539 metres was switched to 194 metres medium wave.  I didn't hear Capital in the 539 era, but Tommy Vance and Joan Shenton did the mid-morning show at that stage, but Michael presented it thereafter for about 10 years, so had the main run.

I don't know if Joan continued with Capital after Michael took over, she hosted Help! on Thames for a while, but I'm presuming Tommy moved to the weekends, as he was with Capital up to 1978 before switching to Radio 1.

Here's two photos of Graham, one from the 1970s and a recent one:

I've just read on Wikipedia that Graham Dene now works for The Wireless,  a new on-line radio channel targetting the older listeners amongst us, the sorts of people who are targeted by Radio 2 on sundays!
