I have a question mark against 07 January 1971.

Does anyone know if they performed on this date, and if so, to what?

Scrooge McDuck's picture

Questions like this are easily answered on the Top Of The Pops Episode Guide over on Popscene, http://z6.invisionfree.com/popscene/index.php?showtopic=8674.

panfan's picture

Thanks Scrooge. I did bookmark those the other day after someone mentioned it and I must make an effort to check them myself now!

According to the information I have the girls danced to Frankie Valli-You're Ready Now

1971 - My favourite Pan's People year ! - so looking forward to seeing this complete. Many thanks Panfan.

panfan's picture

If only it could be complete, Peter, and not full of wiped performances....

(but I know what you mean!)

JEZ's picture

i think the totp episode listings on popscene are very good ,but members from their will tell you that some of the pans routine info ,is sometimes a bit hit and miss as if it is correct on wiped shows ,im not a member over there ,but i would love to ask the person who compiled the episodes lists as to how the info on pans routines on certain episodes came about and not on the other episodes that are listed

panfan's picture

Have I got the date right for the surviving Hot Love?

24 March, not 11 March?

JEZ's picture

Hi panfan ,not sure which performance of hot love it is coz it says the video is blocked ,pans danced along twice with t rex to hot love ,one routine was done as a proper backing dance ,with pans dancing on one stage then moving over to the next stage to dance in front of t rex ,the other clip of the song features pans dancing along amongst the audience ,jumping up and clapping against and then behind t rex ,as they are singing hot love ,they are wearing different coloured t shirts and trousers on that clip ,i think that clip comes from the 25/3/71 ,but not sure on the date of the other

panfan's picture

Try again now Jez, I just uploaded the video and I think you may have caught it while it was being processed at You Tube.

Are both clips extant, as I've only cone across this one I think...

JEZ's picture

Hi panfan ,yes its working now ,this is the clip that im not sure of the date ,it only survives because it was used on the tv show disco i think ,and they dont seem to have junked their shows like the bbc and itv have over here ,yes the other t rex clip survives still i think in the bbc archives ,ill have a look panfan if i can spot it on you tube ,it was repeated some years back on sounds of the 70s

panfan's picture

That would be much appreciated, Jez!

JEZ's picture

yes its up there panfan on youtube ,just type in t rex hot love top of the pops and the other t rex version is on there, the routine is not as good as the one you posted ,but nevertheless is still features the members of pans amongst the audience

JEZ's picture

panfan ,my post seems to have posted twice ,can you get rid of one of them please

panfan's picture

OK, thanks to your help Jez, I've got the other one uploading now.

Have we got them the right way round, date wise?  Is there any way of knowing?  Wouldn't the audience dancing one be the opposite of what we have now, possibly?

panfan's picture

Popscene provides a rather distinct account of PP in 1971. How do we reconcile these?  Just add them in?

Suefan's picture

Why not just leave this list in the thread as it is.  I'm sure some of it is correct but there are a few mistakes.  For example "Fireball" is unlikely to have been on 25 November, a show introduced by Stewpot, since this dance survives with Jimmy S introducing it the following week 2 December.

I do like the notion that the girls danced to Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves but fear it not to have been.  And whom, I wonder, would Flick have allocated to each role: surely Andi, Louise and Dee Dee as the gypsies but for the others???

But I digress.  Going back to 25 Nov as there were three Disc entries, and since "Surrender" had already been done by the girls, I'm guessing that week was Run Baby Run but that's a guess.

Michael Kingsworthy's picture

I hope their performances of Stoned Love and Nathan Jones surface cos they're two of my favourite songs so to see how Flick interpreted the songs would be a joy.

Michael K

Simon O's picture

I think that the Persuaders promo was made in 1971, but I don't know the date it was broadcasted or if it was on TOTP.

pp4ever's picture

January 1972

JEZ's picture

panfan ,hope you dont mind me mentioning that the promo for tap turns on the water ,done by pans does exist

panfan's picture

Not all Jez, keep the corrections coming!  I'm relying on you guys to keep me right here!

JEZ's picture

it would be really good news for us fans of the dancers ,if we knew for definite that their pans performances on the databases were 100 percent correct ,i know dates can be sometimes wrong ,but it would be really helpful to know the song entry was correct ,if it is we would be able to fill in the missing dancers songs info with no problems ,but what gives me a few doubts are like on the 16/5/74 episode of totp on popscene ,they have got louise clarkes last apperance listed as spiders and snakes ,and pans member sue menhenick confirmed that she is almost sure it was the r dean taylor song ,theres a ghost in my house ,as she remembers rehearsing that routine with the pans girls to get some experience at dancing with them before she made her debut ,and popscene have this song listed as the chart rundown on this perticular show

JEZ's picture

Hi panfan ,the episode that featured pans dancing to the who ,lets see action ,is one of the episodes i believe that have recentley been recovered ,there were 2 from 1971 that have turned up

panfan's picture

That's good news, Jez.  It that recovered to the BBC?

Hopefully they'll get a repeat one day!

Suefan's picture

Just to add to Jez's post the other from 1971 that turned up alongside Lets See Action was Fireball (see earlier post).

panfan's picture

I don't have that in the list I think - have we missed it out ?  This was a TOTP with a PP performance?

panfan's picture

I have in my notes that the 25 March T Rex Hot Love shows PP in the crowd, so I guess I have these two videos the wrong way around, since I have them on a rostrum on that date and the dancing in the crowd on 1 1March...

ETA - they're swapped now, so should be right!

Scrooge McDuck's picture

That would coincide with my records, because some time ago I noted the 11 March for the version that was shown on disco, and the disco version is the one where they are not in the crowd.
The original info is here:
http://missingepisodes.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=totp&action=display...

panfan's picture

I can't seem to find this anywhere.  I know short segments are commonly used in the compilations used in documentaries.  If anyone can do a 200 pixel square shot from it for above, it would save me looking it out and be really appreciated!

panfan's picture

I wonder if any if the dancers kept a diary of their routines?! That would certainly help sort things out!

Flight14's picture

Oh yes if only we had a diary to refer to!.

Is it definate that the Pan's People 'Theme from The Persuaders' promo is January 1972 & not  December 1971 ?.....Are we absolutely sure it was ever broadcast on TOTP ?....because as we know If a song dropped down the charts at the last minute;so did the routine for it.

It's one of my favourites & it's not even dancing !! :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wig7cU8OhmA

Disco Duck's picture

Excellent work as ever!

Just a small thing, but I think the 27 Dec 1971 entry of My Sweet Lord must be the Xmas repeat of the dance originally done on 21 January, which is showing as deleted?

Cheers

Disco Duck

panfan's picture

Good question. I had it in my mind that the Dec version was a new recording, not a repeat of the earlier one.

Any other opinions (Jez!) ?

Disco Duck's picture

Just a guess of course.... but as I understand it, we know that Flick left during 1971.

It would therefore seem unlikely that she would still be dancing as late as 27th December, as she is in this routine?......that would surely make it her final dance!!

Cheers

DD

JEZ's picture

Hi panfan ,yes its deffo a repeat of my sweet lord from early 71 ,i can tell by the totp scenery that was used early 71

panfan's picture

Yes of course, Disco Duck, silly me!

Thanks Jez - so was the early 71 show not wiped then, or is it just a case of the PP routine being saved?

JEZ's picture

im not 100 percent sure how true this is ,but i once read that flicks last apperance was to run run run by jo jo gunne in 1972 ,i suppose we could ask dee dee if she remembers flicks last dance

JEZ's picture

the early pans of my sweet lord early clip has gone from the early shows ,but the same clip survives on totp 71 part 2 ,which is still in the archives

JEZ's picture

Dont forget flick was stil dancing on totp with pans at the end of 71 ,she can be seen dancing on the 30th dec 71 edition to jeepster and the promo of stoney end

panfan's picture

Thanks for the comments - I'll edit the list to link to the video from both dates.

JEZ's picture

i think its safe to say that flick was still in the line up on totp at least until jan 72 ,because she can be seen on the promo with pans to the theme from the persuaders from totp jan 72

Disco Duck's picture

More puzzles to solve!!  Will it never end.....!

Thanks for your input.

My mistake........I had assumed that both of those routines had been taped earlier.

My friends'  wife (who is a dancer) is visiting DeeDee's dance school in a few weeks, so I may have to jot down a few cheeky questions for her!

Cheers

DD

pp4ever's picture

...appearing in front of the cameras at least as late as April 1972, but as there's so little TOTP left from that year it's easy to misinterpret things.

Disco Duck's picture

Thanks PP4ever.

Wow, that is very interesting!

Can I suggest that we consider amending Flicks' Bio, which seems to have her leaving in 1971?

Cheers

DD

panfan's picture

Certainly we will, Disco Duck, thanks for spotting that.

We rely on everyone's eagle eyes to make sure everything is up to date and consistent!

panfan's picture

Following discussion here, now updated to add Another Day / Paul McCartney & Wings, which Jez thinks was likely on 11 March.

cornershop15's picture

Was this performed during the end credits of one show?

I've found two other pictures from the routine with Clive Dunn:

Flick and Louise are visible but, unhappily, not Dee Dee and Andi

Clive Dunn with Louise unfortunately Standing in the Shadows:

Both pictures by Ron Howard. In another, Tony Blackburn is shown awarding Clive with a Gold disc. Popscene have Tony as presenter of the 7th and 21st January 1971 editions where Grandad is listed. If this is from the latter, might it be the same show where Pan's People danced to My Sweet Lord?

Doc's picture

Looking on the Kaleidoscope site it says they have a Phillips 1500 tape of 2/12/71. The routine that day would have been Cher-Gypsies, tramps and thieves according to Popscene. I've not seen it listed on any other site as surviving.

JEZ's picture

Hi doc according to my friend suefan ,pans danced to fireball by deep purple on the 2/12/71 ,i dont know if suefan has been lucky or not to have seen this performance but he said jimmy saville introduced the performance
