TOTP FAN's picture

I heard that she managed Leg's and Co after they finished on TOTP's 81-86, maybe she has some pictures of that era of the troupe and if any other dancers joined?

Hi Lulu, I must start by saying what a great job you did with the routine for Wings -Silly Love Songs, Cherry, Patti and Yourself were wonderful and it really summed up the hot summer of 1976. Do You still dance these days?.

Suefan's picture

Hi Lulu.  It seemed you were always Flick's pick when the girls needed a driver for one of the routines such as "Spirit of the Radio" and "Roadrunner".  Was this by chance, or were you learning to drive and keen to get behind the wheel whatever the occasion?

Suefan's picture

Another question for lovely Lulu is I may be so bold.  After leaving TOTP did one of you take responsibility for the choreography or did it become a team effort?

panfan's picture

There's no limit on questions per person, Suefan, so feel free to ask what you want!

Hi Lulu,

I really like your hairstyle from your Ruby Flipper days, how do you feel about that era, looking back, do you like the fashions, hairstyles and music from the 1970s Disco era?, I love the mid/late 1970s myself.

Hi there Lulu! I love watching you on TOTP and YouTube, and I love your hairstyles and cheeky smiles. :-)  I really enjoyed watching the Fred n Ginger routine you did for "The Continental" - do you have any favourites that stand out in your memories? AND - for that song, they had champagne... did you get to drink it after the show LOL... all the best xxx

PS Hope you like my avatar :-)

Hi Lulu,

Not a question this time, just a compliment.

I saw you dancing with Ruby Flipper in the rerun of TOTP very early this morning dancing to Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel, I have always loved that song and you looked really lovely, what an entertaining and amusing routine, everyone did really well, this along with Silly Love Songs, Heart On My Sleeve & Morning Glory has become a great favourite Ruby Flipper routine of mine - Thanks Lulu, for such a young lady you did a fantastic job.

Lulu, I love the Morning Glory routine, Ive recently bought that lovely track on cd, I will always think of Ruby Flipper whenever I hear it.

Such ashame Ruby Flipper couldnt of continued into 1977, I missed you the first time round, the 1976 TOTP re-run has been the best thing on tv in a very long time.

Thank You for the entertainment.

Ps - Your hair when you did Morning Glory looked so amazing, the style and the lenth was spot on, wish those wonderful mid 1970s hairstyles would make a return.

Hi gotta admit lulu was always my favourite girl in legs and co but going back to her ruby flipper days ,there are four discs on most databases that ruby flipper are supposed to have danced to ,ive not seen these routines or remember them myself but can lulu confirm that ruby danced to these four discs ,so we will then know that the ruby flipper databases are correct

a little bit more -dr hook

leader of the pack -shang ri las

the light of experience -george zamfir

afternoon delight -starland vocal band

also does the disc loving on the losing side by tommy hunt springs to mind that ruby flipper could have danced to it on totp ,if lulu can recall these routines then the ruby flippers databases will be spot on and complete ,many thanks

panfan's picture

Hi Jez - unfortunately Lulu can't recollect after all this time if she danced to any of these or not.  Hope you can figure it out!

Cherry's Eyebrows's picture

I thought you weren't speaking to her until October... LOL!

by gum panfan i didnt expect my question to be answered to soon ,thanks for taking the time to ask lulu ,i must admit i do forget sometimes when i ask these sort of questions that it is such a long time ago to expect the dancers to remember every routine they did ,i suppose if the dancers themselves dont remember the missing routines theres no other chance of getting any definite proof ,other than the routines might by magic turn up somehow somewhere one day ,but thanks anyway panfan and of course lulu

panfan's picture

Sorry, had a busy few days here!

Sue confirms she did a duet with Phil to 'Afternoon Delight', and will continue to have a think and will let us know if she can recall the others.

JEZ's picture

hi ,lulu do you still keep in contact with the other girls from legs and co ,

JEZ's picture

hi lulu ,i know you and legs did hundreds of routines but i always remember pans saying one of the hardest routines to learn was the good bad and the ugly by hugo montenegro because louise once said you couldent count the beats on that song and more recentley i think it was dee dee who said the theme from shaft record was a really hard one to do as well ,was there any song that you can remember dancing to that you and the rest of the girls found difficult to rehearse and get the dance steps right

JEZ's picture

Lulu going back to your ruby flipper days im glad that you were picked because you were always my favourite but did you know if mary from pans people was invited to join the new group ,she had only been with pans for 6 months and was still young and a good dancer i just wondered why she never went on to join ruby flipper ,

Lee and Mary Fan's picture

Great question Jez, I was so sad when Mary....and Lee disapeared from Top Of The Pops, they were my favourites .

I think Mary would of been wonderful in Ruby Flipper,  she was a great dancer and a very attractive lady.

JEZ's picture

Lulu was there any routine that legs and co did on totp that caused any complaints either by the public or mary whitehouse    to the bbc ,were any said to have been not suitable either costume wise or dance move wise for a family tv show ,because as you know things were very different in the 60 and 70s on tv, and mary whitehouse was always on the lookout for something she didnt think was acceptable for us, the british public, lol

BBC 4 have recently been showing old TOTP's from 1976 and i have enjoyed watching them all.  I was seventeen at the time and i remember watching the show religiously and having a massive crush on all the female dancers especially Lulu. It never ceases to amaze me how you guy's remembered the routines. Did you ever make mistake's and have to start all over again?

JEZ's picture

hi lulu ,when you took over the running of legs and co ,did you keep the name legs and co for the group ,or was it always the same ,i know at one time it was in a newspaper that legs were after a new name ,after their time on totp ,and people could send in suggestions ,i remember sending in a name ,but ive gotta be honest i cant remember what i thought of now ,but obviously i dont think it must have been a very successsful suggestion of a new name from me lol

Lee and Mary Fan's picture

Hi Lulu,

I really enjoyed last nights re-run of TOTP and watching Ruby Flipper dancing to Morning Glory ( my favourite Ruby Flipper routine ), Ive been waiting months for this episode to come round and it was worth the wait, what a great episode it was.

You looked a Million Dollors during the Morning Glory routine, the dance really captured the hot summer of 1976 and you looked so cute, thanks to all for the great work, if you are still in contact with Patti, please give her my love.

JEZ's picture

Hi lulu ,what do your children think about your career as a dancer in one of britain most famous dance troupes ever ,are they proud of the fact that you have still got lots of fans ,30  years after legs left totp, which just go to show what an impression pans and legs made on the british public

Hope it won't be long before you can publish the interview with Lulu... admiring fans are looking forward to it!

Lee and Mary Fan's picture

Hi Lulu,

You looked AMAZING in last weeks TOTP re-run, your hair was at its 1970s best, I wish there were more photos available of yourself during late summer 1976.

I agree with Cherrys Eyebrows ( I love that name.......has anyone noticed how cute Marys eyebrows are?, lol ) I cant wait to read Lulus interview at this website, cant be too long now and Im sure it will be worth waiting for.

JEZ's picture

Hi panfan ,hope you dont mind me asking ,but any news as when lulus interview will be published ,cheers

panfan's picture

Hi Jez

Yes I was going to post about this as there gave been a few enquiries.

I was going to do it in September, but things got put on hold during my extended absence.

I will be getting it sorted over the next few weeks and it will likely appear before too long.

Apologies to all again for the delay....

Following on a question above by TOTPfan, I wonder if Lulu can recall any venues and datesthat Legs & Co toured after 1981 and is there any film footage at all of that time?  The only film I have heard of was from a TV program "The Video Entertainers" but any footage/pics of the Tours or Corporate appearances after 1981 would be like finding the Dead Sea Scrolls to some of us.  Any chance they exist Lulu?

Hi Lulu - first of all I'd like to say I had a real crush on you back in '76 onwards when I was 6, which has returned with a vengeance watching the reruns of TOTP! :)

So, a couple of questions if I may - as a musician I love the process of writing a song, creating something new from whatever inspires me. Sometimes I just begin with a simple melody, lyric or chord structure, and it takes off in twists and turns from there.

What intrigues me is where on earth did you begin creating a dance routine? Especially one involving so many bodies! And how did it evolve into the finished routine? How difficult was it to create and learn these dances within such a short timeframe?

Secondly, one of the things I love about the charts in the 70s and 80s was the diversity of the music. So many different genres, from disco, rock 'n' roll, punk, funk, new romantic etc. Was there a particularly favourite 'era' or style of music you had a fondness for? And any that you had a definate disliking of?

And finally (for now!) did you often get recognised in public? Did you feel like a celebrity? You must have had a fantastic life, being so young too.

By the way, your hair looked awesome back in '76, did you ever go back to that style? It really suited you! I think they modelled Amanda Holdens' look on you for the series The Grimleys. The resemblance is striking!

Jase (Lulu fan club member 001) :)

Lee and Mary Fan's picture

Superb questions & comments for Lulu, I totaly agree with you about Lulus hair and yes, Amanda Holden in the tv series The Grimleys did resemble Lulu ( why dont they release that great series on dvd!! ), I wonder if Lulu has ever seen it?.....so onto my next question for Lulu - Did you ever watch the tv series The Grimleys?.

I wonder how you coped with the fame at such a young age.Was there a good support system?

Glenn

How did the routines for the cabaret act version of Legs & Co vary from those of TOTPs?I mean, could you give us a taste of what we might have expected to see had we been lucky enough to see a show?Thank you and Happy New Year Lulu.

Jase's picture

Hi again, I just have a few more questions for Lulu.
Firstly, I was wondering if you kept any momento's from your TOTP days, for instance the 'almost famous' t-shirts which Cliff Richard gave you all, or any of your outfits?
I read on another site that the costumes were quite flimsy and wouldn't stand up to repeated wearing! I guess they were made up quickly on a weekly basis, specially for the routines. Who designed them?
I suspect a lot of members on this site are very nostalgic, and to some degree really miss a particular time in their lives. Sometimes I wish I had been born 10 years earlier, so i could have lived through the 70s as a teenager rather than a child. As you were a teen in the 70s, I wonder if there's anything you miss or were fond of in that decade, be it the fashion, the disco culture, or anything particular to the 70s? Or even the 80s?
During your career on TV, did you ever do any appearances other than on TOTP?
Do you still dance at all, just for pleasure I mean? And are there any expectations of you at parties to shake your booty more than the rest of the guests? :)

Have a fab new year!!!
Jase

Slowly getting through this website (lots of content here!) I have just discovered Legs & Co appeared on Celebrity It's A Knockout, and Tiswas. Uptil now I have been quite envious of all the bands the girls worked alongside in their career, but now I am downright jealous! I'd have loved to have been on those shows! Lol!

Any recollections of those appearances, Lulu?

Jase

panfan's picture

I'll see if I can look out some of those appearances to upload later...

Lee and Mary Fan's picture

Hi Lulu, Did you ever meet Pans People member Mary Corpe?, I wonder if you ever met duing 1976 while Ruby Flipper were being trainned by Flick as the new TOTP dancers. Also, what are your favourite tv programmes? Have you ever watched Life On Mars and its follow up series Ashes To Ashes?.

Lee and Mary Fan's picture

What music were you into during the mid 1970s and what music do you like these days?

Lee and Mary Fan's picture

Patti & Yourself looked amazing on your Never Mind The Buzzcocks appearence ( although I dilike this programme as I feel they belittle their guests, not my type of humour ) are you still in contact with Patti?, if you are, please send her my love.

Lee and Mary Fan's picture

Lulu, Do you ever watch the current day version of TOTP which is shown at Christmas, if you do, what do you think about it?.

Rusty Carno's picture

I would like to ask Lulu if there were any songs she would have liked to have danced to 1976-81 but never got the chance.  Also does Lulu think it would have worked for Legs & Co to have continued on TOTP beyond 1981 and what challenges would they have faced [besides the dreaded Hurll]

Rusty

Jase's picture

Lulu, I've been watching the Egyptian Reggae routine a few times now and it just cracks me up!

Were you aware of how funny this looked, and were you in a constant fit of giggles while you were performing this? It must have taken a lot of concentration!

gibb1962's picture

One clip on YouTube called 'Nice Legs Shame About The Face' is very funny. What are your memories of that sketch. Thanks Lulu.

Glenn

What was your inspiration for becoming a dancer?Thank you Lulu.

Glenn

I'll be doing the interview with Lulu inthe next week or so, so any last minute questions, please add now!

Lee and Mary Fan's picture

Lulu,

What are your favourite tv programmes?, have you ever seen Life On Mars & its sequel Ashes To Ashes?, both recent favourites of mine and were great programmes for 1970s and early 80s nolstalgia.

Lee and Mary Fan's picture

Lulu,

Although I missed out on Ruby Flipper first time round, I am now a great fan thanks to the BBC Four re-run last year, how do you feel about having so many new fans?, I would like to say Thank You for all you have done and all your friends from Ruby Flipper and Legs & Co for all the enjoyment you gave, that enjoyment continues today, many people including myself think you are lovely.

JEZ's picture

There has been discussion lately lulu on the backing numbers from 1981 on totp ,now at the end of your time on totp ,i always then and now think it was very unfair when your main spot was taken off totp and you were just used as the backers ,but before that earlier in the year when you had your own spot on totp and you also did a backing number as well on the same show ,i really thought it was a real bonus for us fans to see you lot on totp twice in one night ,and some of the backing dances with fred wedlock ,shaky ,sharon redd and anneka etc ,were in my opinion very good backing performances which complimented the singer  on stage very well ,Where you all against doing any backing numbers at the time ,im on about the totp where you also performed your own spot as well,or didnt you mind helping to add a bit of glamour to the artists performance on stage
